C.P. Addition: Death of Elizabeth de Badlesmere, wife of Edm

Dear Newsgroup ~

Elizabeth de Badlesmere was the wife successively of two important
men, namely Edmund de Mortimer, Knt., Lord Mortimer, and William de
Bohun, K.G., 1st Earl of Northampton. Accounts of the lives of Edmund
de Mortimer and William de Bohun may be found in the authoritative
Complete Peerage, 9 (1936): 284-285 (sub Mortimer) and Complete
Peerage, 9 (1936): 664-667 (sub Northampton).

The Mortimer account states that Elizabeth de Badlesmere died 8 June
1355, but gives no documentation whatsoever for this date. The
Northampton account states that she died in June 1356, citing Calendar
IPM, vol. viii, no. 291. It also notes that she left a will dated 31
May 1356, requesting burial at the Black Friars, London.

Mention of Elizabeth de Badlesmere, Countess of Northampton, is found
in the records of Walden Abbey which confirms that she was buried in
London:

"Anno Domini MCCClxx. obiit Willielmus de Boun, comes Northamptoniæ,
cujus corpus sepelitur in parte boreali presbyterii nostri. Et
Elizabetha uxor ejus sepelitur Lundoniæ in ecclesia fratrum
prædictorum ante majus altare" [Reference: Dugdale, Monasticon
Anglicanum 4 (1823): 139-141 sub Walden Abbey).].

The discrepancy in death dates in the Complete Peerage two accounts is
noted in the Complete Peerage corrections volume, 14 (1998): 489,
where the reader is instucted to delete the date 8 June 1355, in favor
of June 1356.

Interestingly, a record of the death of Elizabeth de Badlesmere is
given in the contemporary Wigmore Chronicle, which alleges she died 8
June 1360:

Wigmore Chronicle sub 1360: "Eodem anno [rectius, 1355] VI idus Junii
[8 June] obiit domina Elizabeth, comitissa de Northampton, uxor
Willelmi Boun, et filia Bartholomei de Badlesmere apud Rachifford quam
Edmundus de mortuo mari filius Rogeri primi Comitis marchie prius
duxerat in uxorem." [Reference: Taylor, English Historical Literature
in the 14th Century (1987): 291].

The modern editor, Mr. Taylor, has corrected the date to 1355, he
evidently not being aware of the discrepancy in dates between the two
accounts of her death in Complete Peerage. Apparently the correct
date is 8 June 1356.

The Wigmore Chronicle likewise states that Elizabeth de Badlesmere
died at "Rachifford." I don't immediately recognize this locality,
nor is it identified by Mr. Taylor. Perhaps some valued fellow poster
can provide the identification of this locality.

I should mention that Elizabeth de Badlesmere needed a dispensation to
marry William de Bohun, as he and her first husband were related in
the 3rd and 4th degree of consanguinity by virtue of their common
descent from Enguerrand de Fiennes, seigneur of Fiennes.

1. Enguerrand (or Ingram) de Fiennes, Knt., seigneur of Fiennes (Pas
de Calais).
2. William de Fiennes, seigneur of Fiennes (Pas-de-Calais), married
Blanche de Brienne.
3. Margaret de Fiennes, married Edmund de Mortimer, Knt., 1st Lord
Mortimer.
4. Roger de Mortimer, Knt., 1st Earl of March, married Joan de
Joinville.
5. Edmund de Mortimer, Knt., Lord Mortimer, married Elizabeth de
Badlesmere.

1. Enguerrand (or Ingram) de Fiennes, Knt., seigneur of Fiennes (Pas
de Calais).
2. Maud de Fiennes, married Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford and
Essex.
3. Humphrey de Bohun, Knt., Earl of Hereford and Essex, married
Elizabeth of England.
4. William de Bohun, K.G.., Earl of Northampton, married Elizabeth de
Badlesmere.

For interest's sake, I've listed below the numerous 17th Century New
World immigrants that descend from Elizabeth de Badlesmere by her two
marriages.

Rochford in Essex, which a seat of the Bohuns - see

http://www.crosbyheritage.co.uk/locatio ... ford-hall/

The variant spelling of 'Rachesford', 'Raccheford, 'Rachford' etc for
Rochford may be seen in the Patent Rolls online, eg

Thank you (sincerely) for not cross-posting.
