Found the Manifest, great news
Great news!
I now have the "List or Manifest of Alien Passengers for the
US Immigration Officer at Port of Arrival" that shows my
grandmother's entry into the US from Norway.
Background:
I, and a cousin's daughter, have been searching for more
information and background on my grandmother.
We knew (or believed) from a dated note, when she
left Norway to go to the US. But we could find nothing
official of her being in the US for over 15 years following.
I do not believe I ever posted on this group before,
but I often read here for information that helped the
search. (Yeah, I probably should of asked, but I hate
to be a bother, and procrastination, and all that!)
I followed up on many 'false leads'.
My cousin's daughter finally found it and just sent me
a copy. Really neat!
We now have official record, it gives her name,
her age (21)
her sex and status (female, single),
she was able to read and write (Norge, I believe)
nationality (Norway)
race or people (Norwegian)
final destination (town in North Dakota)
have a ticket to final destination (yes)
by whom was passage paid (self)
possesion of money (only $10.00)
going to join (brother in North Dakota)
Ever in prison or institution (no)
polygamist (no)
anarchist (no)
? copy to small to read! (no)
condition of health (good)
deformed or crippled (no)
And the ship was the "Laxonia" sailed from Liverpool.
My main questions I request help on, are areas that
I can not understand or read the handwriting and abreviations.
1. Under "Calling or Occupation" there are many on this
manifest that I can read, like "Farmer, carpenter, servant,
on visit, sailor,
Her's looks like "Douper" or "Donper" or "Dorpen".
Any ideas on what this could be?
Also, several others appear to be "FL". ?
2. Under "Last residence"
Her's looks like "Noss".
Any ideas or information on this?
(many others are "Voss", but her's seems clearly a "N")
3. And the ship. On one false lead earlier, I found information
on a different ship, so could probably do it myself, but if
anyone cares to give me a shortcut on the ship,
"Laxonia", I'll gladly accept it!!!!
Thanks to all!

No ships by the name of Laxonia listed on http://www.norwayheritage.com
A google search for Laxonia ship gives a handful of hits - one of which
talks about the Cunard Line ship Laxonia. A search for Laconia ship
gives a _lot_ of hits.
Sure it was not the RMS Laconia or RMS Saxonia of the Cunard Line ?
http://www.steamships.org/maritime/stea ... .s.laconia.

The Laconia is listed on http://www.norwayheritage.com, too. Two of them - one
that was built in 1911 and did transatlantic voyages from 1912 until she
was torpedoed and sunk in 1917, and the second which was built in 1921
and did transatlantic voyages 1922-1925. Ironically, the second Laconia
was also torpedoed and sunk - this one in 1942, in the South Atlantic.
I think you have most likely misread the ship's name.
You are aware that a lot of ship Manifests are available online from
http://www.ancestry.com (pay service) ?
But it would be a lot easier to help you if you actually gave some
_information_ about what you already know - like the name of the
passenger, port of arrival, date of arrival etc ...

Very possible.
It is in fancy big handwritten script. Looked like "Laxonia",
but with your suggestion, and comparing the smaller handwritting,
my further pursuits will probably be for "Saxonia"!
Thanks!
Well, I'm not positive of anything, but pretty sure the
third letter is a "X", not a "C"
Ahh, kinda. Then, we did not care to pay to be told "nothing found",
and now we have the manifest.

I notice that you did _not_ answer the key questions:
1) what is the name of the person you are looking for ?
2) what US port did he/she arrive in ?, and
3) on what date ?
Forgive me for being blunt, but if you want an good answer to your
questions on profession etc, then you have to provide enough information
that people who _have_ access to sources like ancestry.com (e.g. me)
have a chance of looking at the original, or you have to take your
photocopy and go have it scanned, and the image put up on a web site.
If you do not _want_ to share this information, fair enough, but then
people (e.g me) who have access to ancestry.com, cannot help you by
trying to look up the original and trying to figure out what it says.
And then it is simply not worth my time to try to help you with
interpreting handwriting. Ancestry lists 128,775 names of people who
arrived in the port of New York on a ship named Saxonia over the years
1820-1957. 844 of these with a listed ethnicity of Norwegian, 232 of
these being females.
It is not very likely that anyone would bother to go through that list
(or http://www.ellisislandrecords.org and look at the original image
without knowing anything more about your ancestor.
Either you provide enough information or you have to keep guessing on
your own. Your choice.

Agree with Stein; you should consider to gove some more information
(you may have done so previously, but not with the same subject in the

"Douper", "Donper", "Dorpen" could all be e.g. "Datter"=daughter
Most probably Moss (or Voss...)
A scanned image in jpg of the handwritten list would be a good thing.

I understand.
I am sorry.
I certainly did not start out intending to be difficult.
If I had the chance to do things over in life,
fair number of things I would do differently.
Certainly my posting the OP yesterday from this
isp / account, is one such thing I would want to change.
I can not change the past.
So, I have somewhat painted myself in a corner.
For a variety of reasons, I chose a while back to
not expose my 'real world serious email accounts'
to the potential dangers of being posted in newsgroups.
And somewhat similarly, I chose to not be that direct
in linking this a425couple account to me
(although I do not use it for mischief or rudness).
For the last couple of years, I considered creating an
additional account, and using that to post to this
newsgroup, and listing all the specifics of my search
and relatives. I did not get around to it.
My relative found the document we most wanted.
I was so elated at that important (TO ME) find, that
I wanted to share the good news. So I did.
Meanwhile, I thought while I was at it I'd ask the 3
questions. And an answer on one (the ship) certainly
helped. But asking the 3, was probably "A Bridge Too Far".
But, respectfully no, I will not here and now dump
out all specifics.
Again, thanks,
and I'm sorry.

questions. And an answer on one (the ship) certainly
helped. But asking the 3, was probably "A Bridge Too Far".
But, respectfully no, I will not here and now dump
out all specifics.
Again, thanks,
and I'm sorry.

May I respectfully suggest that you discuss your concerns about privacy
on the net (or whatever is your concern) with a somewhat more internet
savvy relative or friend ?
If you can get over your apparently overblown fear of being "exposed",
you might find the Internet a great source for genealogical research.
Good luck in your quest for more information about your ancestors!

Stein

My main questions I request help on, are areas that

snip 3 specific questions etc.
I notice that you did _not_ answer the key questions:
Forgive me for being blunt, but if you want an good answer --
then you have to provide enough information ----
If you do not _want_ to share this information, fair enough,
but then people ----- cannot help you ---
Either you provide enough information or you have to keep
guessing on your own. Your choice. Smile, Stein
To kind and helpful Stein, Hugh, and others
who contacted me by direct email.
So I did.
