Translation of word "hannem"

Would someone be able to translate "hannem", it appears in Norwegian (I
think) documents and is my surname. Just wondering what it would mean in
Norwegian.

"hannem" is not Norwegian. However, in Danish it is an arcaic form of
the pronomen "him".

It seems not to be a Norwegian surname.

before 1820

surnames were not generally in use in old Norway

Believe that Kosund is in error. Could not find a Kosund, Norway,

and the

passengers say they are Norwegian. The script looks more like

Krsund, and a

search for that town in Norway does not find one, but there is a

Korssund,

which might fit. It is about 60 miles north of Bergen, Norway.

A more likely interpretation of Krsund is Kristiansund.

That is also a good possibility. At any rate, it certainly looks like the
name Hannem is probably Norwegian.

There are also 42 Hannem listings in the US census, over the period of 1820
to 1920, and 12 show their birthplace as Norway, and 2 as Germany.

Some of the answers depends on the original documents of the original
poster, and whether Hannem is capitalized, or merely a word in a sentence
that is not a surname.

England has always been full of foreigners - since roman times

If they were there in the 1840ies life was tough for the working classes
so a norwegian might well have decided to move on to USA

especially if homesteading was available
and it is a good norwegian farm name too

I can't find Hannem as name at a norwegian farm or place, but Hanem is a
place near Tingvoll in the midle part of Norway (Møre og Romsdal), and it is
a well known name in Norway. It is pronounced as it is written with double
n, and in older documents you can find it written with double n. I don't
know the exact meaning of the name, but the last part, "...em", comes from
the norwegian word "heim", which meanes home. That ending is often used in
norwgian names. The first part might be the name of a river or a hill or a
mountain near by.
