Please Help Linkpendium Index the Web
Hi all!
Having started with a directory of Illinois genealogical resources,
Linkpendium has now finished a first pass through all US localities
and surnames *WORLDWIDE*. (Worldwide locality indices are coming in
the future ... )
We have now built a directory to 1,082,984 sources of genealogical
information on the Internet. Most of the data sources are free, and
the relatively few pay datasets are clearly marked.
Linkpendium is by far the largest genealogical link collection on The
Net.
Nonetheless, we know we have missed many important resources. So,
again starting in IL (but working on the rest of the country and all
surnames in parallel), we are doing a second pass looking for
resources we've missed.
YOU CAN HELP US!
All Linkpendium's lower-level locality and surname pages include
links to a Web form that allows visitors to nominate new links. If
you visit us at:
http://www.linkpendium.com/
please take a moment to make sure that we have links in the
appropriate categories to any Website, mailing list, or message
board that you administer. Also, if you just have a favorite site
that we've missed, PLEASE use the Web form to tell us about it.
WHY HAVING A COMPLETE DIRECTORY IS IMPORTANT
Obviously, a complete directory is useful to genealogists. Having
access to a categorized list of all, say, the Cook County IL resources
will save genealogists a lot of Googling.
But more importantly, in the next phase Linkpendium is going to use
the directory as input to a search engine specialized for use by
genealogists. This will allow folks to search for their ancestors
without having to dig through hundreds (and often many thousands)
of irrelevant links returned by Google.
If we don't have a genealogical resource in the directory, we can't
make it searchable by the search engine. That's why your help in
making the directory complete is so important.
PLEASE PASS THE WORD!
While we're starting the second pass in Illinois, we'll be working
on the rest of the USA and surnames world-wide in parallel. If
you participate in lists or message boards frequented by other
folks who can help us index all the Internet's genealogical
resources, please feel free to tell them about what we're doing
(or just forward this letter).
Thanks, everyone, for the help. I hope we can build something of
great value to the genealogical community. Cheers, B.

Re: Please Help Linkpendium Index the Web
Dear Dr. Brian Leverich,
Clicking into "a 1,082,984 link directory of genealogical resources",
currently shows only a blank USA page with ONLY a direct search
link to ancestry.com from Linkpendium.
"Worldwide locality indices" are already comprehensively available
at the Genealogy and Family History Internet Web Directory: Index
to over 6,000 quality site listings. Professional worldwide genealogy
and family history home page, connected to thousands of related sub-sets,
with billions of primary or secondary database records.

I know. Unlike Bob, I *did* help write the rules. 'randvax!leverich'
has been doing USENET essentially since the early 80s, and for grins I
still operate one of the largest text-only USENET hubs on Earth.
Yes, I know.
I multi-posted for a very specific reason: it's absolutely predictable
that one of the makes-lots-of-noise-but-doesn't-actually-contribute-
much-that's-useful crowd would respond and touch off an essentially
shannon measure zero thread.
But look at it this way - 4 (?) posts to 4 groups. 10 replies in one
group, none in the other I think. So 13 posts total, rather than 10 posts
total for any newsreader that is crosspost aware. Not sure it helped.
I see what you're saying, but it does muddy the waters when there could
now be 4 separate threads on the same original post.
By multiposting, I ghettoized the noise into a single newsgroup. Amen.
I see what you're saying, I just don't think it helps anything.

Brian knows, or should know, that crossposting is preferred to multi-
posting. This is because most newsreaders are intelligent enough to
know that if you read the message in one group, it shows up as already
read in the other groups it's crossposted to. When it's multi-posted,
that linking doesn't exist so it gets re-re-re-re-read in each place it's
been individually posted to.
These mechanisms exist for a reason.

I believe that everyone is entitled to free speech.
And posting to these news groups consitutes a form of free

If you are so concerned about it maybe you should go to an moderated
group, then you will lose all the posters to this righteous group.
What you evidently don't understand about the free speech issue is that
nobody is obligated to read what your write or listen to what you say. The
