Family Tree Maker 2005 - Multiple marriages

Legg inn av Kathryn M Rogers » 24. april 2006 kl. 7.22

Hello Listers,

I have FTM 2005. Somehow, I have managed to put in a marriage twice, same
people, same parents. The husband and wife do not appear twice in the
alphabetical listing. How do I merge the marriages? Thanks in advance for
any help.

Regards,
Kathryn Rogers

Check that all the dates are for the couple married in both entries are the
same, FTM 2005 should then ask if they are the same persons and do want to
merge them.

Thanks Bill, but the husband and wife only appear once in the alphabetical
listing, and the children only appear once in the alphabetical listing, so
what I need is to be able to merge the marriages and I don't know how to do
this.

This is an interesting one.

If there 2 people twice (=4) I would expect 4 entries in the individual
list. And, along the way, FTM would have queried you when you were
entering the same person twice. I just tried duplicating your situation,
and got lots of warning.

But if there are only 2 people shown, FTM probably isn't seeing the
duplication. Which makes removal by "merge these individuals" impossible.

I don't know how many descendants there are of the two/foursome, but I'd
make a copy of my file (right click the name in the directory display,
copy, then right click again and paste), and play with the spare copy by
removing both (or all of) the affected parties, and rebuilding their
info - reattach kids etc as required.

Please report back....!

Paul

how do you see the second marriage then?

If in a tree it may be a duplicate auto generated to enable other stuff
to fit on the page

if multiple spouses check the children ar step or natural under people
other parents

Note I don't use FTM so this method is theoretical:

I'm assuming you have some how managed to marry person A to person B
twice so they both appear to be married twice, to each other.

1. Disconnect, in turn, each of their children making a note of who
they are, then
2. Disconect the two people who you have married twice, then
3. Connect the two people and add the correct marriage details, then
4. Connect each of their children in turn.

This method should universally work, should retain all person
numbering (RINs etc) and avoid the application auto generating any
parents and/or spouses for anybody.

I see the second marriage in the family page where it indicates the no. of
marriages. When you click on the spouse icon, two spouses appear, exactly
same name, same marriage date. The annoying thing in when I print a
descendant tree, all the descendants come up twice, and there is 5 pages of
them. It looks like I might have to delete and start again with this family,
very time consuming, I was hoping there was a quicker way.

Robert,
You've done it! Thanks so much, it was easy this way. Thankyou to everyone
for your suggestions, every bit helped think it through. Problem solved -
what a great list.
