Census software
Hello,
I am new in the genealogy world and am trying to remain organized with my
findings. Could anyone recommend any software that helps organize U.S.
Census information?
Thank you in advance for any help,
Nicole B.

Re: Census software
I would be inclined to use my genealogy software program to do this.
Other than census information you will finish up with a lot of other
info, such as birth/marriage/death certificates etc. and the genealogy
program allows you to store all this info (source details) in the one
program. It also allows you to link these facts to genealogy details.

One of the best around for census info is a set of Excel spreadsheets
from http://www.censustools.com. And they're "donation-ware". These are
just electronic forms of the census sheets and they're great for
analyzing the census data that you have.
If you don't already have a genealogy program to store all the rest of
your data in, I'd strongly suggest that you get one. The forms at
CensusTools should be used in conjunction with your genealogy software.
I hesitate to give a recommendation as regular posters know I have a bias
<rbg> - but there are two good free programs available for download -
PAF, which you can download from http://www.FamilySearch.org (follow the
links to Order/Download products), and Legacy Family Tree, which you can
download from http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com

I have downloaded every Sullivan (more than 100 spellings) in census,
tax, tithe and reconstructed census that I can find for VA to 1820,
for NC to 1850 and for Tuscaloosa and Pickens Cos. AL from 1840 to
1930.
I use Ancestry.com and Heritage Quest records and selected, copied,
and Paste Special in unformatted text to the WP. Then I edit to retain
the desired data. I accumulate by decade and county and show the
number of occupants by group if even potentially related. I highlight
those known to be related.
I use tabs in the WP which makes the columns as good as Excel. I have
no problem with using Excel except I use it mostly for financial
records.
So now you have a different problem - you have to choose between the
recommended methods.

I just enter it all in Family Tree Maker as family groups and gradually
build connections

A one-name study for JONES would be impossibly big, so this is limited to
one-place RAGLAN
this is the first draft and a work in progress not a final authority
please check all data against original sources.
