HTML file confusion
I used an html converter and now have three files I don't understand.
The first is an "index" folder containing "x0000..1-5.htm"; second is
"people" containing "p000..1-10.htm."; third is "surnames.htm." They
contain different views of similar information.
I want to use Dreamweaver to build the site and created a local view
only; will put in the remote view when done. The "index" file has a
bunch of name indexes, which further confuses me in terms of creating
an index page for the site.
Any tech wizards out there who can enlighten me?
Thanks.

Just upload the pages to the site as they are, and use Dreamwaver to create

will have created links between the family history files, and trying to edit
them will just mess things up and make more work for you in the long run.

Re: HTML file confusion
Thanks, Steve--your quick response is really appreciated.
I think I need to use another html converter. My problem was with
Ged2Web, which seems to only generate lists and charts without any
other data. Converting ged to html and/or generating a decent website
is not a "user-friendly" process, as confirmed by other messages on
this site!
Best,

A lot depends on what you want to do. Some genealogy programs generate web
pages, including the free ones, PAF and Legacy, but I must admit that i
haven't tried those features yet.

I don't know how well these *old* DOS programs work on WinFX and for

I have one database with 34,000+ names and find that GED2WWW works best
for that application because you can choose to display up to 20 families
per html file. GEDPage has an index but displays the data as an LDS
Family History Sheet and I use it for all other databases (10).

Re: HTML file confusion
with any of these auto generated sites
to manage them
edit the gedcom not the site
then delete the old site and upload the new
which is how world connect and FTM sites work
all updating is automated

Some programs, like FTW, limit you to a set number of entries (2000 in
their case) and where you can store them (on their site only?). This is
not much use to most folk.
I use phpGedView, which is a bit more roundabout to set up, but a breeze
to update. Details at http://phpgedview.sourceforge.net/
But to precis this: when an update is needed, create a GEDCOM, upload it
to your site, change a few pointers. I've got about 7000 entries, an
update takes about 10 minutes.
