Family Tree Maker Version 6 Help!
My father created a family tree in FTM ver 6. He passed away two years
ago. The data files were backed up on to floppies, so we have those.
However the PC finaly went, and I had to rebuild a new pc for my
mother. We cannot find the software. I have a feeling she tossed it
right after he died because she was having a hard time going through
his desk. If I purchase a newer version of the software, will the
files open? Or, if anyone knows were I can get the older version it
would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks

Version 6 or any version that is newer than 6 will read that file. You may
not necessarily want to buy Family Tree Maker since there are programs that
can be had for free such as PAF and Legacy. To use them, you would need to
have somebody convert that file to what is known as "Gedcom". The Gedcom
file can be read by any program.

What is the size of that file (.ftw or ?) on the floppy? ??KB If it's not
too large for your email and internet connection, you could email me a
copy and I'll convert it for you. Do you know how to make a Zip compressed
file? with Winzip perhaps. That can reduce the size of a file and make it
smaller for transmission.

Re: Family Tree Maker Version 6 Help!
Hi Minnie,
Yes, your file will work in later versions of FTM. If you plan to stay
with FTM instead of going with one of the free programs, you
should be able to pick one up on eBay for a few dollars. Your dad
would be pleased to know that his work will not be lost and that you
will continue what he started.
Good luck to you,
Pam

As several others have mentioned, the files can be recovered. Just a
word of caution.... FTM files backed up onto floppy discs tend to be
fairly unreliable, especially if they are not verified after the
backups are made. So hold onto those floppies until you're certain
that you have a good copy, ie, until Robert sends you back a GEDCOM
file. It may be necessary to try to read the floppies on several
different computers, until you find one that reads all the discs
without errors. One error in trying to read one floppy makes the
entire file unusable.... so it 's important to keep trying.
