Choosing a web-based genealogy tree site

Hi,

Ancestry (http://www.ancestry.com) has its "One World Tree" where they will
let you upload data for free, but you have to pay a subscription fee to
search it.

GenCircles (http://www.gencircles.com) has something similar, Global Tree,
except that searching is free as well as contributing.

I see that some data contributed to GenCircles has excellent source
citations, and that GenCircles has support for this built in, with a
tab at the bottom where sources are displayed. This tempts me to use
GenCircles. I don't want to put data on the Web without source
citations.

Does anyone think any site has better support for sources than
GenCircles? (I'm not a subscriber to One World Tree, so I can't check
what it looks like.)

Mike,

I use worlds connect which is part of Rootsweb. I also use tribal pages
which I believe ( its been a while) as a place for sources also. Worlds
connect also has sources but only says sources. You can however download a
ged from worlds connect and so long as the user uploaded source you get
sources as well

Rob,

Thanks for the pointer to TribalPages; I hadn't seen that before. I
looked at RootsWeb again too. I guess all sites accept source
information because it's part of GEDCOM. I still haven't seen one,
though, that has a built-in display that's as nice as GenCircles.

Hi Mike,

I run Treefic.com and I encourage you to have a look. The main
features, in comparison with the other sites, are:

- Nice looking tree diagrams.
- Upload GEDCOM files that you've prepared offline or enter data
directly online.
- Make your site public or accessible only to those with a username
and password, e.g. family members.
- Currently free of charge.

Treefic sites are individual; unlike some other sites I'm not trying to
build a complete family tree for the entire human race.

It does have the ability to record source citations, though this is
perhaps not quite as sophisticated as you might want and not many users
seem to be using it. The aim was really to record which family member
had entered the data in the context of a collaborate tree-building
effort.

Treefic is still evolving and all feedback is much appreciated.
