Advice

Hi

Has anyone got Family Tree Maker and if so could you give me an opiunion of it.
Does it write a report based on the tree and what are the phoptographic
qualities in it.

Any help would be gratefully received.

It writes a genealogy report based on the tree but includes only direct
ancestors or descendants. I wish it did otherwise, but I think they all do it
that way.
I began with FTM. I experimented with others but like it the best. But that's
just my opinion; I'm sure others will disagree.

Judy,

Generally, people who like FTM love it, and people who don't like it
hate it. I think it makes "pretty" graphical trees, but is limited in
it's capabilities otherwise. I don't know what "report based on tree"
means, but it does create reports. My main objection to it is that it
creates a repeat of the last report you made, before it allows you to
specify parameters for another report.... for a large data file, this
is wasteful of time and just plain stupid programming.

I'm not sure what "photographic qualities" means either... but if you
mean can you import photos into it, then yes you can. The only problem
with that is that they become a part of your actual file, which means
even a small data file (in terms of numbers of individuals) can become
very large very quickly.

BTW, my experience with FTM is with an old version.... newer versions
may have improved on some of these issues.

I received an FTM file from a client full of photos
to "clean" it
I exported it as a gedcom then reused it as FTM

You need to keep two copies of an FTM file
one with images and one without

If you wanted a copy without pictures, all you would have needed to
done was export to gedcom. Pictures aren't included in a gedcom file
(since it's a text file), much to the dismay of people who have
embedded pictures in FTM and are trying to export their data to a new
program! It's not easy to get the embedded pictures out of FTM to be
used elsewhere!

Hi

Many thanks to all those who replied.

One thing I have learned is that I must keep my records in something else as
well as a bought programme. I am looking at keeping it in an Excel file which
I am assured will accept a Gedcom. Someone is going to give me a lesson
after Christmas on how to do it.

That way I can't lose it all, I hope.

Oncer again thanks for the help.

Happy Christmas

Judy, that seem a waste of time to me. Just save your FTM file to CD
on a regular basis. I make two copies - one for myself and one to give
to my daughter. That way if my home is destroyed and my CD lost,
I can recover it from her. Pam

Surely if you don't have a compatible programme you couldn't open it could you.

Not sure I understand what your asking. The CD I leave at my daughter's
place would still be readable by FTM. Pam

Hi

What I mean is if FTM is compatible with the computer of the day. For many
years I have kept my 4000+ tree along with several others in Generation Family
Tree. The company has now gone out of business and I can't open what I have
because I have now changed to wiondows XP.

However, I save most of my records in Gedcom and will be able, I hope, to put
it into a new system when I get one.

Happy Christmas

Judy.

Ok, I got you now.

I wasn't referring to saving this CD for posterity, but simple as a second
backup
for my own CD here at my house should so disaster strike and I would lose my
computer and backup CD. Periodically, I give her a new copy as I add
new info.

Yes, if you saved you info in Gedcom form, you will be able to load it into
a new program such as FTM.

Just save it as a GEDCOM file.

But you can save program as well as data on CD.

Or if you have webspace save it to there as a gedcom as well. There is
nothing wrong with backing up to several media. I remember years ago
when using the old Atari had my files on a floppy, managed to get them
over to the pc but then that corrupted and is was my only source, there
are some links that I had that still haven't come back.
