Problems with [email protected] - Broken Gateway
During a recent group discussion in this newsgroup,
soc.genealogy.nordic, I noticed some very strange technical behavior and
have come up with the following analysis.
For those like myself, who read & post via the *newsgroup*, private
emails are *not* part of the normal dialogue. My posts are sent directly
to the newsgroup soc.genealogy.nordic and I must view all responses on
soc.genealogy.nordic. If I want a copy of any response, it is up to me
to save it from the newsgroup soc.genealogy.nordic to my computer.
Some people read & post from a "mailing list" which is "gatewayed" to a
newsgroup and do not use the newsgroup. In fact, people who use a
mailing list often do not know about newsgroups. That gateway is
normally bi-directional which means that when a person send a reply to
the mailing list it also appears on the newsgroup. When a post is made
to the newsgroup, it is automatically sent to the mailing list.
What I observed is that newsgroup posts were being sent to the Norway-l
Mailing List correctly. How else to explain the knowledge of and
responses to newsgroup posts? However, responses sent to the Norway-l
Mailing List were not appearing in the soc.genealogy.nordic newsgroup.
Instead, they were being sent as private email to the parties and
showing cc's to [email protected]. However, it is impossible to send
a response to that mailing list if one is not subscribed! The result is
broken threads and unwanted private emails.
Perhaps somebody knows how to fix this problem?

My report was apparently a *False Alarm*. Two separate mailing lists
were in evidence at the time, which threw off my analysis, but the
listowner for Norwaylist has since assured me that it is not gatewayed.
I am so accustomed to following threads via the newsgroup that I simply
misinterpreted the multiple events that I was seeing because it was
unfamiliar to me. All is well!
Apologies for the confusion!

Hi Bob -
I don't manage the s.g.nordic gateway any more, but Andrew Billinghurst
at Ancestry does.
I've forwarded your note to him. Cheers, B.

Re: Problems with [email protected] - Broken Gateway
it is not broken
it is user error or inexperience
plus a dumb default "reply to "
standard on rootsweb (many users have complained over the years)
yahoo groups have better manners
also in Gmail
this is Reply to all
If I use the reply button only Dr B gets to see the email
please try and get Andrew to modernize the default
(histori´cally ante spam and ante flames and ante mail loops)

Norway-I has nothing to do about soc.genealogy.nordic and should

The correct list is [email protected]
There are three lists,
[email protected] for receiving each single message, and which is
the correct address to send mail to
[email protected] is the digest list
[email protected] is the Index-list where you just get the
subjects of the last few days messages and an index for retrieving the
digest containing your message.
Hope this clear up things.
If messages also turns up on Norway-I then someone is posting them
manually there.
Otherwise we risk looping.
