Many thanks to all the people that tried to help on this problem.

A solution/cure has been found from another list. A way to get into System
Restore when you can't see anything icons or task bar on the screen.

Just in case it's any use to anybody else I've reposted it below, again many
thanks to you all for the suggestions.

Kind regards,
Ron O'Neill

Other than that u could try a system restore if that utility has not been
disabled this would be :

Boot up to the wallpaper and the ctrl-alt-del go to file New task (run) then
type this:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe (click ok)

and select restore to an earlier time preferably a time before this problem
occurred :)

Ron,

Just picked up this post, so my previous suggestion was mute; however, I
would also suggest that you download and install the Beta of Microsoft's
AntiSpyware software
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/securit ... fault.mspx . It
might stop any future problems. Also, as a knowing grandfather myself, do
yourself a favor and create a login (with administrator privileges) for
yourself and make everyone else limited users. Kids and "computer gurus"
can't always be trusted.

I'd like to modify that to say that if anyone describes _themselves_
as a "guru", they definately can't be trusted. Wizard, yes. Guru, no,
it's too pretentious.

Ron,

Although that fixes the immediate problem it doesn't tell you what caused
it. If it was virus related it will occur again because most viruses leave
copies in the system restore folder. Have you run any anti virus to be sure
that you are clear? If you don't have any then you could get AVG from
http://www.grisoft.com

Well, yeah. And it applies to all fields, not just computers. (g)

Thanks Robert.

My son lives a couple of miles away and most of the suggestions offered to
the fix have been carried out over the phone with me passing on the
instructions to my 16 year old granddaughter. I have already instructed her
to do exactly what you suggest.

Sotrry I replied to the previous thread, didn't see a new one had
appeared. I'll repeat the info here.
The problem is not with the windows installation, user profiles have
been set for various logons but no rights have been given to the users.
Whoever set them will have also set an administrator login, you need to
find out who set the user profiles up. How old is your grandson?
