Looking for Software

Using PAF 5.2 now. It's a good tool with proper use.

I've been investigating GenBox, The Master Genealogist and RootsMagic.
Haven't made any decisions yet.

I'd like to do for example (additionally what all of these pieces of
programs do):

- I'd like to create new relations (relationship types). E.g. I'd like
to add godparents as linked to their godchildren instead adding their
info to some note filed (it is already lost then.

- To have a scripting language ( I am a coder so it would be natural
interface for me). Lifelines has report language but I think usability
of LL is not very good.(

- To create new event/attribute/any fields.

Any ideas?
BTW I am Windows XP user.

Thank You.

There is the GRAMPS software. It is open-source and written in Python. I
use it.

You could rewrite the whole thing if it appealed to you. You could also
define as many relationships as you want, with a bit of python. The
developer group is very open to enhancements. You enhance it, and they
will likely include the enhancements. They especially like custom reports
and filters.

GRAMPS does run on Windows, I think, but it is developed on Linux.

Python is an interpreted language, pretty much, so porting it to Windows
was not a big deal, as I remember it.

Go to sourceforge and look for the homepage or developer's mailing list.
You may like what you see.

It sounds like The Master Genealogist is closest to what you are looking
for. I don't use it personally (I didn't like their GUI) but it does have
more capabilities for this kind of customisation than most of the others do.

TMG can definitely handle that. For a christening tag you can add roles
such as "godparent" and link the role to the person in your database who is
the godparent.

I don't know about the scripting language since I am not a coder. You could
ask in the TMG mailing list--it's a very active list with lots of
knowledgeable people.

if it is in GEDCOM it is in Lifelines

depends ;-) I prefer lifelines, there are lots of reports available and
you can easily adapt them to your needs.
- To create new event/attribute/any fields.

if it is in GEDCOM it is in lifelines (there is a GEDCOM convention for
individual fields and lifeline lets you edit the GEDCOM set of an
individual with you favourite editor - mine is - guess - vi!!

I thin The Master Genealogist is the only one that can do that, if you can get
it to do anything at all (I haven't been able to).

I don't think any of them can do that.

- To create new event/attribute/any fields.

I think even PAF can do that.
