How to transfer from EXCEL to GEDCOM

Legg inn av Gjest » 3. september 2006 kl. 12.27

A previous thread on this topic has expired but I just read it and
downloaded Smart Genealogy software from
http://alainlecomte.free.fr/Download.htm#SmartGenealogy as I have some
info someone sent me in excel. It would save alot of trouble if I could
convert it into a gedcom and this software has that facilty. However
when I attempt the process I get this message:
"This excel file [name of file] does not have the standard Smart
Genealogy format".
Anyone know what that is?

I'm on XP and Office 2003.

Scripsit [email protected]:

Smart Genealogy most probably needs to know which items are in which
columns. You will probably need to switch the data in the excel-file
around a bit. Try importing a small gedcom file into Smart Genealogy
and export it in excel to see how tings are exported.

You don't mention whether you did anything with your Excel file before
trying to import it. The best way to use it is to

Set up some data (a little) in SmartGenealogy
Export it to Excel
Examine the Excel layout
Re-arrange your Excel data into the required format (or even copy it into
the downloaded Excel file)
Save it
Import into SmartGenealogy

You will find the author's contact details on his website and he is always
pleased to receive feedback.

Graham
