[ANN] Gendatam Suite Beta 2

Gendatam Suite is a Family History application.

Beta version 2 of Gendatam Suite for Windows is now available at the
website http://www.gendatam.com/. Gendatam Suite uses its own data model
while providing support for the usual Gedcom format. The current Beta
adds an improved user interface, improved gedcom access and an optional
macro facility for data entry. Files of any size may be read.

The application is a Java program which has been pre-compiled for use on
Windows systems. Running as native code makes the application generally
quicker and more responsive.

The application has its own look-and-feel. This provides a consistent
interface regardless of the host system.

This beta will be of particular interest to those people who like to see
how well programs will read the various varieties of Gedcom files.

This current beta version expires at the end of August.

Feedback is welcome as noted on the website.

Regards
Peter

I've just had a quick look. I'm not sure where this is leading or the
purpose. Perhaps an explanation is needed - especially as to the purpose
of the current user interface as it doesn't seem to be of much use in
viewing family history information in a useful manner?

I tried loading a 3000 name GEDCOM file exported from TMG. It took
several minutes, hit one half of my dual core Pentium at 100%, and
memory usage went up to 199Mb - during the load there was no user
feedback and the first time I thought the program had just given up as
it didn't appear to be responding. On another attempt after the file had
loaded and without even selecting it or doing anything I closed the
file; the memory remained the same and was only released on closing the
program.

Doing the same again twice more (loading and closing the file three
times in total) the memory usage went up to 284Mb then 335Mb. I then
loaded the file and another similar copy of the file and the memory
usage increased to 464Mb. I couldn't close the individual files as the
message boxes were too short to show any buttons so had to exit the program.

When I tried to view a loaded GEDCOM I couldn't see any Notes or
addresses for various census or BMD records which were present in the
original GEDCOM.

I couldn't see any maiden surnames - all names seemed to be run
together. That running together happened with all names and produced
some very odd looking names and initials as nicknames were included in
the initials - one person with forenames and initials Edward H A, and
also known as Ted and Eddie, ended up as Edward H. A. T. E.

I couldn't find any parent-child links except for ID numbers.

I couldn't make the Filters work. There didn't appear to be any way of
sorting the person name lists.

Running a report(I happened to select Hidden Data) hit one half of the
processor at 100% for over 20 minutes without any user feedback - in the
end I killed the process without it completing.

Thanks for your observations.

First, a couple of points, The lack of feedback on file loading progress
and also the restricted output in this beta version are remarked on in
the documentation. Perhaps I should make more of a point of it? Work is
currently in progress to make file loading more user-friendly.
Regarding your other points, if you could let me have a copy of your file
(for limited-time testing purposes only), I would be happy to look into
what is going on. Contact me offline if you would like to go ahead
([email protected]).

Many Thanks
Peter

Sorry, it is my own family database. However, if you do a Google search for
priddle download gedcom files united kingdom
you will find a publicly available Priddle GEDCOM containing over 6600
names (72000 lines) which should help you in your testing. I've just
tried it and it exhibits similar memory problems (284Mb on first load
and close; 370Mb on second pass).
The close problem was one of path length being bigger than the window so
no buttons were visible. Closing that box with the close icon caused all
the text backgrounds change to white from the standard grey.

You didn't respond to the above. The user interface doesn't have any
equivalent of the interface screens seen in most genealogy software e.g.
individual summary, family, pedigree where all information is easily
viewed in one place.

Person Summary doesn't seem to show any useful info.

Going to Person 2. Birth it is not possible to edit the data. I needed
to go to Events to do anything. There is no date editing so it allowed
1899-99-99 as valid data - although any detail of the event apart from
the ID disappeared from the Events list.

How do I see who are the parents of a selected individual?
How do I see children of an individual from multiple spouses?

What are you trying to achieve?

John
