Hi,
In the UK, I am using the free trial and I am trying to find one
person but cannot, even when I put the precise details in that
enabled me to find the person before.
Is it just me or is this database a particulalry clunky one? I put
in I want to search 1980 and it gives me 19th century finds !!!!
The "Help" files is anything but.
I doubt I will be a paying subscriber.

if it is a living person you are searching the wrong data base
remember how to unsubscribe a couple of days before the deadline
to search electoral rolls
there are other subscription sites
please state here exactly what you are looking for
it takes at least 6 months to learn to use a major data base efficiantly
and years to know all of it
you need to subscribe to the newsletter to keep up with innovations
vital records are a freebie
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectyp ... d/bmd.aspx
july 1837 to 1983
after that you pay 1984 to 2002 (?) a copy of the official computerised
index
all Solihull and Birmingham public libraries have free access
I will take a global sub when I have paid for my next computer

But even when I selected the 1837 -1983 I got crazy results.

Granted. But I am famliar with databases and this really is oddly laid
out to me. For instance, below is a web address that does bring up
the record - however, I do not see how to navugate to it from the
straight entry point of http://www.ancestry.co.uk
I shall check this - can you give me details please?
As far as I am concerned, even if I have the free trial and access to
the 1984 onwards records, I should still be able to bring up records
in the 1837 - 1983 databases without navigating around too much.
Something does not seem right if the searches bring up 19th century
"hits" using the main entry point whereas the address you give above
gives the correct one but also lets you differentiate between
searching births, marriages or deaths.
Seems to be a lack of "how to" help files.
Thanks for the reply Hugh.
Best regards.

1980 very unlikely to be in FreeBMD section - there might very few that
someone added of their own.
basically FreeBMD transcription is up to 1911
So pick the Images from the top menu
which ever you are looking Birth Death or Marriage
Then you can either try a name search or go to the year list down below
and quarter and then first letter of surname
This is almost like looking at the fiche
But either with name search or year you still need to read the image to
see if your person is listed

My point really is that the opening web page does not seem to give you
access to the search displays you get when clicking on a link like
that above. Nor does there seem to be an easy way (if any) to
navigate to those search displays unless you have the link already.
Once I used the above link, it was a matter of seconds to find the
result I had got before.

I left the URL in my reply as it was there and you seemed to be talking
about BMD
From the main Home page or the Search panel you simply click the items
you want - namely England & Wales, BMD Index
and many other items are so shown or you progressively go through the
categories.
Ancestry has a lot of different kinds of database
Many of these are indexed by name a Global search will in essence find
ALL that are indexed.
But BMD images are not so easily indexed
If you have a problem with Ancestry design - click the help in top right
and you can send them some feedback
