FTM saving
Hi All,
Now that my FTM is over 800Mbs I seem to be having trouble with my backups.
Can I save from Family Tree Maker to a DVD? I will soon have to start asking
how to split the file.
Regards
Kaye Payne

1 MB takes a lifetime to download @ 7.2 kbps.)

too many photos in your file. If you used a genealogy prograqm that
linked the photos instead of imbedding them "in" your file you
wouldn't have such a large file to deal with. You might try the trial
version of RootsMagic. It will un-imbed your photos and put them in a
separate folder of your choosing, and convert the rest of your FTM
data into RM. Then you could tell how large your genealogy file really
was.
RM trial is available here:http://www.rootsmagic.com/

Have you compacted your file (Cntl-Alt-C), and if yes, then you have

Backup the file to your hard drive, then Zip the file and copy to CD.

Hooley dooley, Kaye! FTM uses between 2 and 3KB per person, so either
you have, um, lemme see, ah, a big family, or lots of pics. I'd bet on
the latter.
800MB won't fit a CD, but it would fit a DVD. Or zip it, and save some
space.
There are arguments for and agin storing pics embedded in the family
data, but I come down (marginally) on the side of keeping pics apart
from data. Charlie's suggestion about RootsMagic is a good one. If the
download is too big (it's 8.5MB), get in touch off list and I'll make a
CD copy and post it to you.

Re: FTM saving
Hi Charlie, Bob & Paul,
Yes Paul the latter is correct - too many photos but great fun when needed.
I had the Rootsmagic download from way back so paid the money and now can
save etc. I will try that. Just another software program to learn better but
the photos show on the page better I guess.
Thank goodness for gedcoms or I would have areal mess changing around all
the time but each software program is essential.
Thanks
Kaye Payne.

Kaye,
Just one point..... with the latest RootsMagic, you don't need to use
a GEDCOM to convert your FTM data... in fact, you should NOT use a
GEDCOM, because the conversion to GEDCOM loses your photos, whereas if
you import the native FTW file directly into RM, it retains your
photos as linked images to your file.

You can always save it to a compressed folder
With mostly text, its about 3 or 4 to 1 on compression
ie 800m results in 200 to 270 meg.
you could then save this to a CD.
Just make sure you mark the fact that it is compressed on the disk
otherwise you might wonder why it doesn't work.

Re: FTM saving
Thank you all for the suggestions. I have it saved fine now and have used
all methods. If I lose it I would just give up I think. But I see by the
count on Rootsmagic I have 5120 photos installed on the FTM.
It was handy when I had to do a power presentation regarding a family member
in one hour.
