Hi,
I've been sent a UDS file which I believe is from the Generations
Family Tree program.
How can I convert this so that I can read it in Family Tree maker, the
program that I use?

You need to obtain access to a copy of Generations with which to open
the file. Then export a Gedcom from Generations and load that into
FTM.
If the originator of the file still has Generations then s/he should
be able to export a Gedcom for you.
If the originator has used any non-standard fields, data within them
may be lost.

Thanks for the reply.
I've told the sender that I cannot read the UDS file and requested a
GED. However I keep being sent the UDS format and was hoping to avoid
asking again.
I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and ask again.

Do you know anyone locally with The Master Genealogist? That has a .UDS
import so could then export a Gedcom file for you.
Otherwise, if you want to e-mail the file to me I'll try and do it for you.

Re: UDS file
I have found that many people don't understand their software enough to
complete your request. When you ask, if it is not on the main menus,
they can't figure out how to do it. Does anyone know how to create a
GED from Generations? Then send detailed directions to the person.
For example, Go to File, select Export, Select GED, Type in a location
where the file will be saved ( and remember it), Select the name of the
first person to be exported, press OK to begin the GED creation. Over
the years I have worked with people using genealogy programs who don't
even know about GED.

You could have a look around for a demo programe for the said file.
Just type in the search engine.. The Master Genealogist, demo
as i have done.
