Nellie other names
My fathers side of family history is very hard to search but today an
elderly aunt told me that Rosa Gold (Stewart) of London mentioned a
sister called Nellie. The Rosa I have doesn't have a sister called
Nellie and i'm wondering What the name Nellie could also be? Lizabeth?

True. But I had a Great Aunt Nellie (nee KELLY). In one of the censuses the
enumerator thought he knew everything and put her down as Ellen. But her
birth certificate very cleary spells out Nellie. I have known other Helens
and Ellens called Nellie, however.

Re: Nellie other names
Hi everyone, My great aunt Nellie was actually Ellen. My mother was named
after her but referred to as Ella to distinguish the two. I now have a
granddaughter and her name is just 'Nellie'

I've seen Nell/Nellie used as a shortened form of Eleanor.

Thanks everybody. No success I can't tie Nellie to Rosa Stewart at
all. Strange name to mention as the rest of suspected family were
Dorothy. Walter, Rosa and Maggie.

Yes, but not always. Abbreviation of names by family and friends,
(especially by other children who can't get their tongues round a
whole name) is far from uniform WRT to the number or position of
syllables selected or the final sequence of the syllables in the
result.

We were discussing Nellie not Penelope. While what you say might be
correct in many places you are coming from the other direction WRT
"Nellie" and the associated probability of one name equating to the
other is not a reversible quantity IYSWIM.

Re: Nellie other names
My grandmother hated her middle name, which was Laura. So sometime about
1920 she just arbitrarily began to use the middle name Ethel, possibly as a
young woman's admiration for the then-popular Ethel Barrymore. She even
named their first daughter Ethel.
She continued the use of Ethel as a middle name until her first husband died
and she married her second husband in the late 1940s. He preferred the name
Laura, and that is the middle name she used when she commissioned her
tombstone.
Anything can happen with names---sometimes logical, sometimes not.
