I am trying to find out when Johannes was born and where he was born. I know that he had at least one daughter by the name of Sylvia Cartense JacobsenB 18 july 1847 d 23 nay1878. [/code]

Sylvia might be this person in the 1865 cencus, living in Oslo with the Frølich family, and Trine listed above (born in Sandefjord) can be her mother:

The following is quoted from a calendar giving a short biography of the Customs officers of Norway 1563-1886, “Tollere gjennom 300 år 1563 1886” by OSV. I. MELBYE.

”Jacobsen, Johannes, født 1804/05. Kjøpmann. Undertollbetjent i Langesund 1841, konstituert overtollbetjent sammesteds 27. nov. 1841 til 1. april 1845, undertollbetjent i Christiania 22. nov. 1851. Død 3. feb. 1880.”
Briefly translated, Johannes Jacobsen was born 1804/1805 and became a merchant (groceries or others). He also worked as a customs officer at Langesund, Telemark in 1841 and moved to Christiania in 1851. He died 3 Feb 1880.

Cencus 1865 of Christiania gives you one Johannes Jacobsen, age 62, working as a customs officer, place of birth Fredrikshald http://tinyurl.com/2dvrb8 It is indicated that he is a widower (e), but also commented is that he at the time is living separated from his wife ! From the the same census I think this is his wife - Trine Jacobs - and one of their daughters - Sylvia - living at the same adress as Sylvias husband to-be, Georg Frølich http://tinyurl.com/2hj949
