Homer?
Hi,
I am helping a friend who is trying to locate ancestors from Norway. There is a lot of info available on the family in the US, but I can not find the family in Norway. This is what we know:
Information from death record:
Name: Anna Gundersdatter
Born: 22 Jan 1855 in Homer, Norway
Died: 6 Feb 1940 in Nahma, Delta county, Michigan
Married to: Charles Johnson
Arrived in America: 1888
Anna had a sister named Gurena/Gunda Gundersdatter. Gurena was born about
Mar or May 1852 in Norway. Gurena married a man from Sweden who was called "Charles Byrch" in America. Charles and Gurena had a daughter, Anne, born May 1882 in Norway. This family also arrived in the US in 1888 according to most census records.
Charles Byrch (Karl Bjørke?) and Gurena/Gunda Gundersdatter were married in 1881, but I don't know if they were married in Norway or Sweden.
Does anyone have an idea where "Homer" might be? I have no idea if the name is spelled close to what it is in Norway.
Mvh,
Brian

Re: Homer?
Maybe it is a misspelling of Hamar.

Hamar is in Hedmark province:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamar
So you could start by looking at the digital census records at:
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/sok/1865
They have recently changed the way the 1865 census is presented and how you can search -- and I feel that it has become almost totally useless (except, perhaps, for experts).
And the online scanned church books for Hamar are here:

Yoy can still search the 1865 Census the "old way". Just start here:

Re: Homer?
You could also try Hamarøy, Salten, Nordland.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamar%C3%B8y
I could easily imagine someone writing "Homer" as an approximation of the pronunciation of Hamarøy.

Re: Homer?
Thank you all for your help! I did find the birth record for Tollef Tollefsen in Nissedal.
Their family does have a connection to the farm "Home"!
Tusen Takk,
Brian

Re: Homer?
From Nissedal and Treungen Bygdesoga:
From Nissedal Bygdesoga (page 37-38):
- Anna Gunnarsdatter was born (22 jan 1855) after the death of her father, Gunnar Leivson. He died 20 september 1854 (http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1389&idx_id=1389&uid=ny&idx_side=-267 #31). This is probably why she is not listed in the Treungen Bygdebok under the entry of Leiv Gunnarson (page 37).
- Guro Gunnarsdatter, born 1845, married 1867 w/ Tellef Tarjeison Kåsa, from Kåsa, Mule, Nissedal (born 1836).
From Nissedal bygdesoga (page 438):
- Tellef Tarjeison, born 1836, died 19??. Married Guro Gunnarsdatter, Strond, Årak (d. 1900, b. 1837)
One of his children is Tellef:
I think the reason the Nissedal book has a different date on Guro's birth is because there is a previous Guro Gunnarsdatter, born 1836, died 1838 from chicken pox.
The parents of Guro and Anne were:
- Gunnar Leivson Strond (born 1804, died 1854) (married first time in 1828 to Guro Olavsdatter, Moen, Heimdal)
- Åshild Halvorsdatter Dalane, Dale. (married 1834, born 1811. Nissedal page 575)
With regards,
Øystein

Tellef Tellefson (born 1875), emigrated to America about 1900. He returned home and was married with Gunnhild Steinsland. They had a son, Tellef, b. about 1912. Gunhild died about 1918. The widower, Tellef, settled in Sørlandet (basically along the southern coast of Norway). He worked on the Sørlandsbanen railroad and followed the building of this from about 1920.
