Bardu or Målselv

Legg inn av dn09189 » 20. mars 2008 kl. 14.33

Thanks to Odd Villy Ovesen, he has directed me to this area because one distant relative came from here and I'm looking for her parents. Reinholdt Tollefsen, b. ~1830 and Maren Hansen, b. ~1829 live at Viken in the 1865 census.
I am trying to find baptisms for 1829 and 1830 but the scanned records online do not include this time period. I tried to find the confirmation records as well for 1842-1850 but they are not part of the scanned records, just the baptisms.
Are these records not scanned? under another name? not available?
Any direction or assistance that someone can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Also if I finally find out how to go back in time, what would I look under in the 1801 census. I see neither Bardu or Målselv in that record.
Interesting there is a town not far from where I live called Bardo. Didn't realize it was named from somewhere in Norway.
Sincerely,

Until 1854 Bardu was a part of Ibestad and Målselv was a part of Lenvik. Information in the church registers for Bardu and Målselv for the period 1831 to 1854 is copied from the church registers in Ibestad and Lenvik.

You see from the cencus 1865 that they were born in Målselv even though they lived in Bardu http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ft ... 014&lnr=00

They married in 1856 http://www.rhd.uit.no/kirkebok/kbliste. ... v&RR=13163

I cannot find their baptisms in Lenvik 1829-31.

Thank-you. I did look him up in Ibestad and found him. I had looked before but was not used to the format and gave up too early in searching.
Now to continue the search.
Thanks again.

Ibestad Bardu or Målselv

I am wondering if anyone has done much research in the parish records and understand them.
I finally found the baptism of Reinholt Tollefsen in Aug 1830(#71) and lo and behold, his future wife is baptismal record just before him (#70 - 9th Sond. Aft. Trinit.). It is written in Maren's baptismal record #70 that her parents are Hm. Hans Jacobsen Elvevold and Hust. Siri Jonasdat. af Reinholt Tollevsen Bangen ?????? fodt Bardo 20 Nov ??
Why would Reinholt's name be in her baptismal record. The Sponsors are on the other side of Maren's name.

Find 1830 baptisms and then p. 62 right hand side.

How do I write the place of birth? Bangen, Bardu, Ibestad, Troms, Norway? or Bangen, Ibestad, Troms, Norway?
OR?
Thanks to anyone who can provide assistance in this area.

Column for father's name and occupation, residence, mother's name, name of person who baptized the child at home. Reinholt Tollevsen Bangen, who made the home baptism, was Tollev Reinholtsen's father, and his grandson was named after him.

Write farm name, community, parish, county, country = Bangen, Bardu, Ibestad, Troms, Norway.

This is Reinholt Tollevsen sr. in 1801 (Astafjord is the same area as Ibestad parish) http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/we ... =2216#ovre

Marriage Oct.7th 1827 http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1 ... 640613.jpg

Baptism of Torlev Reinholtsen 1802 at the very bottom of the right hand page.

Torlev and Tollev or Tollef are the same name in different spellings.
Reinholt Tollevsen b.1770 at Sjøvegan, Salangen, Ibestad, died 1837 at Bangen, Bardu. He married Guro/Guren Olsdatter 1768 -1859. Reinholt was the son of Tollev Reinholtsen and Kirstina Hansdatter, Sjøvegan. (Source: Astafjord bygdebok I)

Census 1769 Ibestad, Farm Skivejen(Sjøvegan)

Skivejen Tørlef Reinholtsen mann 44 gift
Skivejen Kirstina Hansdr kvinne 41 gift
Skivejen Esajas Torlefsen gut 7
Skivejen Hans Torlefsen gut 0.5

Should I use this:
Write farm name, community, parish, county, country = Bangen, Bardu, Ibestad, Troms, Norway.
after 186? (or was it '50) when Bardu became its own community? Or is that true?

Thank you Åse. I have been able to find that information and entered it.
My big question is:
It is written in Maren Hansdatter's baptismal record #70 that her parents are Hm. Hans Jacobsen Elvevold and Hust. Siri Jonasdat. af Reinholt Tollevsen Bangen ?????? fodt Bardo 20 Nov ??
Why would Reinholt's name be in her baptismal record. The Sponsors are on the other side of Maren's name.???Did the priest get mixed up on where to enter names (his son's baptism is the next record (or maybe he just made a mistake). I wouldn't want to think that a marriage had arranged already? Was arranged marriages a common thing in Norway?
I don't think it says hjemmedobt (home baptism).

This is what the record says about Maren:

Gm: Hans Jacobsen Elvevold Hust: Siri Jonasdat af Reinholt Tølløvsen Bangen hiemmedøbte Pigebarnet født den 20de Nov: f: A:

meaning:

Farmer Hans Jacobsen Elvevold and wife Siri Jonasdr, by Reinholt Tølløvsen Bangen home baptized girl, born 20th of November last year.

Hello. The people you are asking for are the parents of a.a Tollef (Torleiv Viken). He lived at Wiigen Gaard in Bardu. His sisters went to USA about 1900. Are you a descendant of one of these.? If so, we want very much to get in contact with you.
We have done a great deal of work at that farm - rehabilitation and registrations. We -are members of Bardu Historielag. Bardu Historielag has also made a little book about Torleiv Vikens stay at Bella Coola in Canada.
We know a lot about this family, but I can see you have got lots of answers.
I have been at Eastern holiday and have not seen this before now.Is there any informations you still want to know about - perhaps we can answer.

greetings from Bardu

Bodil Haugli.

P.s do you have any pictures of the farm - if not - we can send some you you.

The name Bardo.

From 1850 to 1900 about 1000 emigrants from Bardu went to America. Then they spelt the name Bardo - just as you do. Many av these settled down in Minnesota - and they called the place Bardo. After a while (1894) - some of these early emigrants moved on - to Canada. Some went to Bella Coola, and some went to Alberta There they named the new place also Bardo. So Bardo I is here - in Norway. Bardo II is in Minnesota - and Bardo III is in Canada. Bardu Historielag is working on a book about these emigrants - and therefore we very much wants to know all about what happened to those who left.

I enclosure a photo of Reinholt Tollefsen and Maren Hansdatter Kalbækken. It is from Bardu Bygdebok bind I. The daughters in the photo has to be Ane Marie b. 1851, Sigrid Kjerstina b. 1862 and Hanna b. 1866.

Hello Bodil,
Thank-you so much for your information. I have been researching my ancestry in Norway for about 10 years, since all my ancestors came from Norway (Viking blood flows through my body!!). There is such a wealth of information online and also, people who are so willing to assist. In turn, I try to find out information for others. In this case, my dad's cousin married a Hagen (Mørkhagen from Elverum), so therefore an "outlaw" of the Vinge/Bergum union. His grandmother, Emma Viken married Gunder Hagen and just yesterday, I met with the "outlaw" as they travelled up to my area to visit family.
I will pass this information on and whatever information you have, that can be passed on, will be entered into my data bank so that I can make charts and reports for the family. They are having a reunion at the end of May.
Thank you for your time and efforts in replying and also in the project about Bardo.
David
P.S. I believe my grandfather ministered at the Bardo Lutheran church in the 1930's or 1940's but I have to check on that. He was a minister to many congregations in Alberta and Saskatchewan in that time period. His fluency with Norwegian made it possible for him to conduct services in that language as well as English. It was his father and mother that came to America (1882, 1887) from Norway and then to Saskatchewan (1905).
