Ole Strand of Lansvik, Hovin or Mjønes

Re: Ole Strand of Lansvik, Hovin or Mjønes
Looking for the Norwegian ancestry of my great-great-grandfather, Ole Andersson Strand, Born Oct 1836 at Lansvik, Norway
Died 14 Feb 1920 at Wildrose, North Dakota
Married Anna Seversdotter or Severson? Wallin (names are unreliable)
Born: 25 Jun 1842 at Hovin, Horg, Norway
Died: 21 Feb 1931 at Wildrose, North Dakota
Children:
Anna /Strand/ (c1860-1865)
Ole /Strand/ ([1861]-1887)
Randina (Dina) Rhodine /Strand/ (1870-1943) born Hovin, Trondheim
Andrew /Strand/ (1876-1910) born Hovin
Olina "Lena" /Strand/ (c1887-1940)
Two children were reportedly born in or near Hovin. The family lived and worked at Mjønes, in the shadow of a mountain called Mjøneshatten. Ole Strand was a fisherman and boatbuilder. They were churchgoing, unknown which one.
Family immigrated to USA sometime after 1887.
This information is all anecdotal and may not be very accurate.
Here's the WorldConnect page:
Thank you for any information.

Re: Ole Strand of Lansvik, Hovin or Mjønes
Hello. I think I've figured out that the location may not be Hovin but rather Hevne (Hemne). This after a discussion on geography in the Trondheim area.
I've also learned they may have lived at Stranda, in the Snillfjord municipality. I would assume it is the name of a farm, and it is on Astfjorden east of Mjønesaunet.
This means Ole Strand would have been born Ole Anderson in Lensvik, then moved to Stranda in adulthood, and kept the name Strand when they immigrated to the US.
We do have 2 children born at Hevne:
Randina Rhodine Strand (1870-1943)
Andrew Strand (1876-1910)
I did spend some time looking on the http://hemneslekt.net/ website but found nothing familiar.

Hi!
Difficult to find these persons. Both Ole, Anne and Andersen are rather common names, and since there are no farm names involved, they are almost impossible to trace. I think however this is the right family:
Emigrants from Trondheim 1867-1930:

The age for Ole is 50, and this means that he was born ab. 1843 (not 1836?). Anne's age is 48 which means that she was born ab 1845.
Since the tickets are paid for in America, there is a possibility that relatives have left Norway earlier (maybe 1887?)
The only place named "Strand" I know in Snillford (previously part of Hemne(Hevne) is situated on the island "Hemnskjel", but Strand is also a rather common name in this area.
Still searching!

YES! These are definitely my people! It does not list my great-great-grandmother, Randina
Rhodine Strand, possibly because she immigrated in 1887 according to family legend.
Family legend also says they lived in the view of Mjøneshatten:
<a href=http://Gnarlodious.com/Cogent/Peterson/Astfjorden.png>Lenke</a>
I am now thinking they lived across the fjord from the mountain, in the place "Stranda".
It would seem reasonable that they took the name Strand from that place, probably a farm.
Where would there be a hstory book of the area? I also found out brom my great-aunt that
they were Lutheran. Do you know if there would be churchbooks out there for the area?
I suspect Anna was from the area as we have her as being born at Hevne, the person
"Martin O. Mjønesaunet" may have been related to her, since it is neighboring Stranda.
I believe I will go back to the http://hemneslekt.net/ website and search some more!
I also have a question for you. The inscription on Ole Strand's gravestone "doden-livets-krone".
What does it mean?
Thank you for this discovery!

Re: Ole Strand of Lansvik, Hovin or Mjønes
Hi Rachel.
Take a look at this family at hemneslekt.net:
<a href=http://www.hemneslekt.net/getperson.php?personID=I2927&tree=Hemne>Lenke</a>
We have Ole Andersen, born 1838 in Stadsbygd (I think Lensvik at that time was part of Stadsbygd parish), married with Ane Pedersdatter Mjønesaunmælen born 1844. All the children except for Marie seem to match (Anders = Andrew, Randi = Randine).
Could Ane Pedersdatter be misspelled Seversdatter at some point of time?
It seems that most of their children were born at Selnes, which is a farm in Snillfjorden, about 15 km southwest of Mjønesaunet (which lies in Åstfjorden).
At last, their daugther Anna Oline, seems to be born at Stranda, Hemnskjel. Maybe the family lived here the last years before they emigrated, and therefore took this name as family name.
Regarding the gravestone inscription, this means "Death is the crown of life".
Kind regards, Jon

Re: Ole Strand of Lansvik, Hovin or Mjønes
Hi!
I think we are getting closer now, at least when it comes to Ane Pedersdtr.
If you take a look at this page:
<a href=http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp>Lenke</a>
You will find Ole Andersen b 1839. Parents Anders Evensen and Ragnhild Johannesdtr. (Hemnskjel?)- which matches the records at "Hemneslekt" (above).
The question is: Who is Anders Evensen, and where did he come from? Maybe he came from Lensvik since his son Ole assumably was born there?
There have always been close relationhips (marriages)between Lensvik/Agdenes and Hemnskjel.
Mvh

Re: Ole Strand of Lansvik, Hovin or Mjønes
EUREKA! You have found it!
Just this morning I had done research on Hemnskjel island, where these families appear:
Vollan, Wollan, Sivertsen.
Since Ole was a fisherman it seems logical he would be trolling the islands for a wife...
Jon Stolpnessæter: I did in the last few days ask my great-aunt's daughter where she got the names Wallin and Severson from but she does not remember. She is very old. Most likely the name could be Pedersdatter, corrupted phonetically over the generations.
It's also possibly Sivertsen was a family name of Anna Strand and will be looking closer at it in the next few days.
This is exciting, thank you Norwegians!

I guess this is Ole Andersen in the 1865 census:
<a href=http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f61612&gardpostnr=596&merk=596#ovre>Lenke</a>
Ole's family position is stepson of the family head Peder Sivertsen. Probably his father Anders is dead and his mother Ragnhild has married Peder.
Karl Andersen could be a younger brother of Ole.

Re: Ole Strand of Lansvik, Hovin or Mjønes
Hi Rachel!
I have added the descendants of Anders Evensen Størdal to my db, and made an ancestor list of Randine (enclosed). Just to make my db more complete, I would like to include descendants of Randine (and perhaps her siblings?) Do you have such a list to mail? I have made a descendant list of Even Olsen Størdal if you would like to find relatives of Randines' paternal side. If you give your mail address, I will send you this list as well (16 pages).
My address is: [email protected]
Ancestors of Randine:
1. Randi (Randine) Olsdtr. Selnes, b. 31.08.1870 in Snillfjord, baptized 23.10.1870 in Hemne kirke. Emigrated to America ab 1887.

1. Randi (Randine) Olsdtr. Selnes, b. 31.08.1870 in Snillfjord, baptized 23.10.1870 in Hemne kirke. Emigrated to America ab 1887.

Re: Ole Strand of Lansvik, Hovin or Mjønes
Wow Stig, this is great! Thank you for all your work. These 16 pages you want to send me, can it be in the GEDCOM format? I'd hate to have to enter all that in a database again.
Of Ole and Anna, 2 chidren survived; Olina, 306 known descendants and Randena, 152 known descendants.
Of course I will share my GEDCOM files with you, but give me a little time since I am entering data every day at the moment.
