Father of Anna Iversdatter Aurdal baptized 21 Jan 1731
Hello,
I am looking for help to identify the parents of my 5th great grandmother, Anna Iversdatter. She was the wife of Sifver Nielsen Dyrdal - who I made a separate post on this same fourm for.
I found Anna's birth record in "Fylkesarkivet Sogn og Fjordane: Døypte i delar av Sogn og Fjordane innanfor perioden 1669-1895" and it lists her father as from Aurdal. It also only lists his first name and no mention of her mother. I know that Digitalarkivet has digitized parish records for Aurland back as far as 1716; however, I cannot read those records very well. Here is what I have found about Anna:
She was engaged to Sifver Nielsen in February of 1753. I could not read the exact date, but the record can be found in Sogn og Fjordane county, Aurland, Parish register (official) nr. A 3 (1735-1761), Engagement records 1754, page 179. The page link is: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?i ... _side=-179
She was married to Sifver Nielsen on 29 Oct 1753. The record can be found at Sogn og Fjordane county, Aurland, Parish register (official) nr. A 3 (1735-1761), Marriage records 1752-1753, page 195. The page link is: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?i ... _side=-195
Anna and Siver had two children that I found. Their first was son Niels born 22 Nov 1753 and the next was daughter Mette born 13 Jan 1755.
I also looked for her father's death in "Fylkesarkivet Sogn og Fjordane: Gravlagde i delar av Sogn og Fjordane i perioden 1669-1920." I searched for both "Iver" and "Ifver" but did not find any suitable Iver candidates based on their age. I did see four potential Ifver candidates: One was named Ifver Olsen born 1689 and died 21Sep1740. Another candidate was named Ifver Simonsen born 1692 and was buried 16Arp1768. The third and youngest candidate was named Ifver Alfsen Loven, was born in 1709 and was buried 15Mar1776. Finally, there was an Ifver Larsen Veum with an unlisted birth date and a burial date of 28Sep1779. I think it says that this last candidate fell in the river and drowned with his brother. That would be odd for an older person.
Any help you can provide to identify the names of Anna's parents would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Thad Carlson

Re: Anna Iversdatter born 21 Jan 1731 in Aurdal
Hello
Had a look in the parish records.
There is a little bit more information about Iver.
He is listed as Iver i Præstegaarden = Iver at the parsonage.
In the listing made by Fylkesarkivet - with Aurland is not meant the parish Aurland, but the farm Aurland.
Kjeldeinformasjon: Sogn og Fjordane fylke, Aurland, Ministerialbok nr. A 1 (1716-1734), Kronologisk liste 1731, side 65.

Permanent biletlenke: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1 ... 660734.jpg
The engagement date is not in February. It is one of the Sundays after Trinitatis.
It is not quite easy to see what number is behind that smear of ink, I think perhaps it could be the 8th Sunday after Trinitatis? That would be 12th August.

Thanks again, Tove! I had assumed that "Aurdal" referred to the farm Aurland. Thank you for confirming that. This Iver has been very hard for me to find as well.

Yes, this Iver could very well be dead before the parish records start in Aurland.

Iver Præstegaarden had some more children baptized
Marrit - 22.7.1736
Ole - 6.4.1743
Anne - 1.3.1744
At the baptism of Marrit the name of the mother is given: Guri

Thanks Tove! It looks like Iver made it until at least 1744! It also looks like his name might have been spelled Iver, Ivar, or Ifver at the time of his death. It seems that the two most logical candidates would be Ifver Simonsen (1692-1768) or Ifver Alfsen Loven (1709-1776).

Re: Anna Iversdatter born 21 Jan 1731 in Aurdal
Hello
There is also a probate in 1741 after Ifver Olsen who had died at Præstegaardseie.
He had been married two times. Name of the wives not given.
Children from the first marriage:
Jørgen - 14 years old
Ole - 12 years old
Giertrud - 13 years old
Children from the second marriage:
Svend - 6 years old
Anne - 8 years old
Wife of the second marriage must have died before Ifver, a widow is not mentioned in the probate.
I don't know how this fits in with the information we have on Iver - or there could have been two men named Iver at the Prestegaard (parsonage) ?

Hello Tove! Thanks again for all of your help. How confident are you that the Iver at the Prestegaard had a daughter named Anne in 1744? Does that seems odd to use a name twice, as they already had a daughter named Anna born in 1731 that was still alive? For this Iver Olson who died in 1740, his last child was named Anne and was eight years old at his death. That puts her birth date around 1732 - which is very close to my ancestor Anna Iversdatter Aurdal. This Iver Olsen is an interesting candidate, having died where we expected him to be.

Sometimes two children can have the same name.
But there was a probate in 1741 after Iver Olsen. So the children born in 1743 and 1744 must belong to another Iver.
Here is a Svend baptized 18.1.1734 with father Iver Vangen

Since Anna was the first daughter in the second marriage one could think that the name of the first wife also was Anna (naming tradiiton)
Have tried to find the marriages of Iver, but it is not so easy.

They had a son Jørgen (named after his maternal grandfather) and daughter in the second marriage is named Anna.
So this must be the same Ifver Olsen we have found the probate for.
Must try to find his second wife too.
Have found something in the S & F fylkesarkiv database

A reference to this page in the parish record, but that is not a marriage record -

It fits in very well that Annas mother should be named Mette since she has a daughter herself in 1755 who is named Mette.
So I belive that this Iver Olsen must be the Iver you have been looking for.

Found something more which was very interesting, but then I "lost" it, so have to write again.
There was a probate after Anna's brother Svend Iversen Sønnereim in 1779
Svend probably did not have any children. The estate was going to be divided between his widow Marithe Olsdatter and his siblings: sister Anna Iversdatter married to Siver Nielsen Wenjum and half sister Giertrud Iversdatter married to Ole Alfsen.
So this Iver Olsen must be the Iver you have been looking for.

Hello again Tove! Incredible! You have done amazing work figuring this out. This turned out to be a very challenging problem, as it appears there were two different Ivers living at the parsonage in the same time period. Thank you very much for your superb detective work!
I checked in Fylkesarkivet Sogn og Fjordane: Vigde i delar av Sogn og Fjordane i perioden 1669-1922, and there is a record for a Iver Olsen marrying a Mette Olsdatter on 18 Jun 1730. The date is right, the groom's name is right, and the bride's name is what you suspected it would be. Do you think this is the right record for the 2nd wife of our Iver Olsen?
Thanks again, and I hope you are enjoying your summer.

Hello
Yes, Mette Olsdatter must be Iver's second wife.
I have followed up the record in the database of S & F fylkesarkiv, and I could find both of them listed in the parish record among the persons taking communion on that day, but I have not been able to see that there was a marriage taking place between them on the 18th June 1730.
I found the record for the burial of Iver's first wife, which was January 6th 1730.
There is also a marriage between one Erich Olsen and one Mette Olsdatter 10.9.1724
So perhaps she was a widow when she married Iver?

Yes, Mette Olsdatter must be Iver's second wife.
I have followed up the record in the database of S & F fylkesarkiv, and I could find both of them listed in the parish record among the persons taking communion on that day, but I have not been able to see that there was a marriage taking place between them on the 18th June 1730.
I found the record for the burial of Iver's first wife, which was January 6th 1730.
There is also a marriage between one Erich Olsen and one Mette Olsdatter 10.9.1724
So perhaps she was a widow when she married Iver?

Thanks again, Tove. I will note Mette Olsdatter as Iver Olsen's 2nd wife and Erich Olsen as Mette Olsdatter's first husband in my family tree records. I didn't see a burial record for Erich Olsen before 1730 in the Fylkesarkivet Sogn og Fjordane: Gravlagde i delar av Sogn og Fjordane i perioden 1669-1920, but I think we can leave this to mystery.

Hello
Maybe you could put a question mark after Erich Olsen. Not hundred % certain it is the same Mette Olsdatter.
Now I found something which was a little confusing
Ifver Præstegaarden has a daughter Anne baptised in 1733 (top left)
Kjeldeinformasjon: Sogn og Fjordane fylke, Aurland, Ministerialbok nr. A 2 (1726-1734), Kronologisk liste 1733, side 105.

If the first Anna/Anne died and there was another Anna - that would I think be too short time then before the brother Svend was born. They did not wait very long with the baptism in those days. Have to think about it.
From the information in the probate it should be a couple of years between the two.
Probates are probably the most reliable information.

I think there must have been two people named Ifver/Iver at the parsonage at the same time. As you suggest, the time between when Anne Iversdatter #2 was baptized (August 1733) and when Sven was baptized (January 1734) doesn't make sense. Mother Mette would be pregnant with Sven starting about early April 1733. That makes having another child in July or August of 1733 impossible.

Hello
I read again the baptism of Sven(d)
d: 18 Januari døbt Jfver Vangens Barn N: Sven vidner til Daaben deres Ærværdighed Hr Sven Sheen Joen Sult Elisabeth Carine Sheen Moder i Præste Gaarden Jørgen Christens.
Svend Scheen was the minister of Aurland parish.
"Moder i Præste Gaarden" - must be the minister's wife
Elisabeth Carine Scheen - perhaps their daughter. Or it could be Svend Scheen's sister.
So Sven(d) was named after the minister. So that is probably why they did not follow the "naming rules" for him.

Hello Tove,
That is very interesting! Thank you for mentioning. I am amazed how everyone is connected or related in Aurland.
