Nels Olavis Thorson, f. 1842

We are looking for the birth record of Nels Olavis Thorson, said to have been born either 8 or 18 Jan 1842 Eiesland, Fjotland near Flekkefjord.

His parents are said to be Tor Oddson and Joren Ryggesasen, and it said that he emigrated to the United States in 1860 or 1861. He was a soldier in the Wisconsin 15th Regiment, and lived until 1918 in Wisconsin.

I have not been able to find his birth record or emigration records in the Liknes church books, and any leads would be helpful.

Yes, one of my tasks is to check the Vesterheim database and fill in missing information on our database.

Unfortunately, the Vesterheim database is also missing a lot of information and it doesn't appear that they are going to update it, which is a shame, since their records include all Norwegians known to have been in the US Civil War, while our list will only be on the Wisconsin 15th Regiment, known as the Scandinavian Regiment.

The church book of 1842 has misspelled the parents' names. His mother's name as Gahrsdatter, it is corrected above: Gasesdatter. Gase is a rare name, used in Kvinesdal and Mandal parish, Gahr is also a rare name, used in Eiken and Grindheim parish.

Asgjer (Aschier) was born on Veggeland in Fjotland (Øvre Kvinesdal), baptised 13. Feb 1811, parents: Gase Stensen and Ingeborg Bjørnsdatter:

Thor Odsen Eiesland (24) and widow Ascher Gasesdatter Vester-Vig (29).
In this 1837 church book the groom's father is misspelled (like the groom). The father was Od Thorsen Eiesland.
