What is known about the ancestors of Landgraf Ludwig der Bärtige (the
Bearded?) of Thuringia (Thüringen)? The one who married Caecilie of
Sangerhausen.

Allen,

the only info I have was that his father was unknown and his grandfather a
minor noble - no names. Ludwig was apparently related to Counts of
Rheineck. Not much help but perhaps someone else knows more.

I guess that the relationship to the Rheineck Counts is the only thing,
that is known for sure about the family of Luwig der Bärtige.

Let me then just show you a lineage from Erwin II of Gleichen back to
Lüdwig der Bärtige:

27. Grev Erwin II af Gleichen, død 7.9.1193. Søn af:

28. Grev Ernst I. af Gleichen, Tonna og Harburg, død 29.12.1152. Søn
af:

29. Helinburg von Lohra. Gift m. Erwin I. graf von Gleichen, 1040-1116.
Datter af:
They were probably ancestors also of Engelbrecht von Gleichen, who died
1208 in the battle at Lena in Sweden, but how? Daugter of:

30. Beringer von Lohra. Søn af:

31. Uta (Oda) von Thüringen. Sister of a Beringer. Gift m. Dietrich
von Linderbach. Datter af:

32. Count Ludwig I. der Bärtige in Thüringen. Related to the Rheineck

Do you know anything about the relation the exact nature of the

Dear Allan,

This is a very interesting lineage but there are a few questions.

I checked Ludwig I der Bartige of Thuringia in the latest ES Schwennicke and
there is hardly anything in regards to any ancestors. And this makes it
impossible to find whether Ludwig and Counts von Rheineck have ancestors in
common.

Now a problem.

Your generations
27.Greve Erwin II af Gleichen
28.Greve Ernst I af Gleichen
29.Helinburg von Lohra wife of Erwin I graf von Gleichen

Isenburg is no good as it has been updated by ES Schwennicke Volume XIX
Tafel 98.

Who you call Erwin I graf von Gleichen is there shown as _Graf, Graf in
Thuringen_
the first count von Gleichen is his grandson.

The more serious question is Helinburg von Lohra. Do you have sources to
give her that surname and a father? ES calles her Helenburg, founded in 1130
Kloster Volkenrode, died after 1133, buried in Volkenrode. There is no
indication of her origins, nor a father.

Another volume (1.1 Tafel 145) of ES does give us
your generation
31. Uta/Oda married to Dietrich von Linderbach. This also gives her, as you
say, a brother Berenger. Do you know why their son should be Beringer von
Lohra?
