First name Karre

Legg inn av gj25883 » 29. september 2016 kl. 13.33

My grandfather was from Norway, married and moved to Sweden. In Swedish he was always called "Kåre".
Unfortunately all of my known ancestors from his and my grandmothers side have all passed away so I hope you can bring some clarity into the name and spelling.

I found an old tobacco case which stated his name as "Karre".
Is that the correct spelling and is it the proper name or a nick name?
I can find traces of that name but I find it rare or a name not given nowdays? Correct?
Any furhter insight or explaination would be great.

Hi

Kåre is a norwegian name.
Old spelling was Kaare, a few use this spelling today also.
I have never heard the name Karre as a given name only surname.

If you have his birthdate and place we might find his baptizm if he was born before 1930.

Thanks Vivi.

Yes, Kaare was what I've been searching for and what I've thought been correct.
All I know so far is that he must have been born 1920-1930.
I knew him as "Kåre Höjer" and he met my grandmother in Värmland in the west of Sweden.
The tobacco box is in silver and states "Karre Höjer" which made me second guess the first name. (Danish?)

I'm currently trying to get some information from my cousin and maternal side if they have any insight to the whereabouts he was born.

The insight is much apreciated, Vivi.

Perhaps the word "karre" could refer to the shape of the box? Svenska Akademien's dictionary has a listing of the word "karre", used for square objects. Derived from French "quarré". Also used in Danish as "karré".

While it might be a long shot, a place to start can be to find other people with similar names in Norway. In many cases, the father's first name is passed on to a son. In the indexed Norwegian archives, the search "kåre|kaare hø*r" gives 9 records, of which two persons born in 1896 and 1899 in the Trondheim area might be possible candidates to invest further.

Did they marry in Norway or Sweden? And what was her name? There are hits for "Kaare Høyer" (1950.12.20), and "Kåre Høier" (1949.03.31, 1967.09.08) in the Norwegian official announcement's newspaper (used for marriage bans among others), but one needs to be connected through a Norwegian library to see anything else than the meta data.

A Kaare Høyer (possibly from Trondheim), was in 1919 a representative for a cigarette factory named Strengberg & Co (Trondhjems Adresseavis 1919.10.24) and in 1918 a Kaare Høyer (possibly the same) was elected by a local tobacco salesmen association to represent them at the national meeting in Bergen the same year (Trondhjems Adresseavis 1918.06.12). While silver tobacco tins are not uncommon in Sweden, it might have been a gift passed through generations? The Strengberg company, is likely one from Jakobstad in Finland, who also operated in Härnösand, SE. This Kaare Høyer was also into shiny objects, it seems, as he in 1916 on behalf of the tobacco company M. Glott, gave a (silver?) metal trophy to a football union in Trondheim (Trondhjems Adresseavis 1916.05.09). It was worth 200 NOK back then. Further, two more trophies was produced and given by Kaare Høyer in 1919. Any more descriptions of the box?

Again, all this might be a long shot.

If you have your grandmother's name, starting from their marriage banns, can be a possibility.

The box is round in shape.
However, I just might have some progress and the twist that my grandfather might not have been born in Norway.
The box was found in my fathers possession and I took for granted that it had belonged to my grand father. Now, if Karre is a Norwegian surname the box could actually state the maiden name of my grandfather's mother and his father surname. Karre Höjer.

Anders Höjer (born in Sweden)
Ella Karre (born in Norway(surnane correct??))

Kåre Höjer (born in Sweden 1918 (Gävle??))

I think I have got the answer to my question by Vivi.
It's a surname and not a given name.
Thanks

Karre has been used as a surname in Norway, but it seems to be very limited. Only 15 records in total. See here.

Thanks Per E Hadland. That name on the box is still a mystery after what Kari found.

Kari, wow, just wow... that's my familly!
Thanks a lot.
Grandgfathers mother is known as Ella but stated as Eli in your findings. Hedesunda is correct so I'm sure that is correct.
Also, my grandfathers sister was called "Bojan" but the registered name is apparently Borghild. Sounds plausible?

If I was the correct person to give you a trophy in this kind of detection work, I'd give you one :D

I have a lot of rethinking to do but now I have good grounds to continue now with more accurate details.

Thank you to all.

A side note.
I took a DNA test for fun. It shows me to be more related to Götaland (Swedish west and south) and even more Norway. Apparently I have no relations to Svealand (Swedish east).
