Som folketellingen i 1900 viser, reiste han i utenriks sjøfart en gang mellom konfirmasjonen i 1896 og folketellingen i 1900. Jeg vet at det finnes innrulleringsbøker for sjøfarten, men disse er delt inn i patenter uten at jeg finner ut hvordan jeg finner min mann i disse.

Thank you, but I'm aware of this.

I'm looking for a whole in the history between his confirmation in 1896 and the Norwegian census of 1900, where he is listed as a sailor probably in England at that time. in 1902 he is listed as arrived in the US according to US Census of 1920.

Tusen takk.

Jeg fant til slutt ut hvordan lese sjømannsrullene og fant han til slutt i fornavnsregisteret og i den ene patentrullen. I den jeg fant, den første du lenket til, var det ikke skrevet årstall for avmønstring fra D/S Karmø. Det stod i den andre, så det var til stor hjelp. Artig at du også fant onkelen. Det tar jeg med når jeg kommer til hans tur til registrering.

Han mønstret av i 1901 i Haugesund, står det. Betyr det at han har reist med en amerikabåt på vanlig vis til USA i 1902? Jeg antok at han mønstret av evt stakk av i USA.

Fant innreisedokument til USA. Jeg mener iallefall at det er stor sannsynlighet for at det er han, i og med at alder og tidspunkt for innreise stemmer. Eneste som jeg ikke får til å stemme er i utgangspunktet at siste permanente bosted er oppgitt til Christiania. Det trenger ikke være feil ettersom han mønstret av i 1901 og kan ha reist til Christiania før han reiste til USA via England og Canada.

Have you tried to find Carl (perhaps Charles) Helgeland in Canton??...I was not able to find Carl Helgeland (or Lars) in 1900 or 1910 in Canton.

Also, in the above immigration document it says Mikael's last work (occupation) was as a farmer...in Oslo (Christiania)...does that "fit"??

I do see that the age of 21 fits with your Ole Mikal...but Christenson is a common name...
This could be another fellow.

There is a chance that this is another person. The only thing that collides is the last place of residence. However Norwegian Census of 1900 lists only 1 person called Mikal (or similar spellings) [K/Ch]ristens[e/o]n at any birth year. It has to be him given name, country, birth year.

Carl/Charles Helgeland is a mystery. I think it says Bro Law. I have no record of sisters going to America. Neither have I been able to locate Nikoline/Lena/lina Jacobsen (wife) anywhere else than in the censuses.

Edit: I also found his brother Hans Mandius' immigration record ( https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JNBY-HY7 ) also stateing Christiania as port of origin, but I know for sure he went from Stavanger.

Edit 2: After reviewing the Ship Manifest of Christianiafjord on which Hans Mandius was travelling, I discovered that the ships origin port was Christiania. It docked in Kristiansand, Stavanger and Bergen before crossing the Atlantic Ocean.
