Convert fiche to disk

Legg inn av Jan » 5. mars 2005 kl. 16.21

Hi I'm new to this list but have been researching some years.

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to scan microfiche and save to a cdrom?
My fiche reader has died on me at last (it was older than me to start with!)
and I don't really want to buy another.

I have not seen any easy technique to ease a convertion of data from

fiche to CD.
You may for fun, look into this link http://www.getimaging.com/services.htm

yes

google string
scanner fiche

you need a 30 or 40 times scanner lens

some people photograph fiche reader screens at the library with a digital
camera

http://www.doc-imaging.com/reader_scanners.htm

The Image Mouse Plus allows you to scan, view, digitize and enhance
microfiche and microfilm, on-the-fly, from a desktop PC, live and in real
time! With the PC link, the ImageMouse Plus allows you to view fiche,
jackets and aperture cards as well as 16MM and 35MM roll film media in both
comic and cine modes. This makes the ImageMouse Plus the perfect tool for a
variety of applications, including accessing filmed checks, genealogy
research, insurance records, patient records and a myriad of other
applications captured on microfiche or roll film.
The Image Mouse Plus can be purchased with the 24/28X Magnification Read
Head or the 42/48X Magnification Read Head. There are no other
magnifications at this time.

If you're stateside, many FHCs have this capability these days. Can't
hurt to ask.

And for the ~$2500 list price it ought to wind the cat and put out the
clock, make coffee and fetch my slippers. Would be a nice group (club)
purchase, but kinda pricey for an individual.

It's certainly possible - subject, of course, to copyright restrictions.

We have a Minolta MS6000 at our Berks FHS Research Centre in Reading
that can do it. If you want your own check out
http://www.covergold.co.uk/ms6000.htm - it will set you back a few
pounds!

Seriously the resolution needed for scanning fiche is beyond the
capabilities of most standard scanners with transparency adaptors. Say
you are using fiche with 60 frames (from jacketted 16mm for example)
Each frame contains an A4/letter page say 11 inches reduced to half an
inch. The equivalent of 300 dpi on an A4 page would then be 22x300 about
6600 dpi. An HP Scanjet 5530 will manage 2400 dpi. Next consider that
many fiche have more than 100 frames which will up the dpi requirements
still further. Ah I see a Canon scanner reaches 3200x6400 dpi.

One thing that will work for reading fiche, at a pinch, is an Intel QX3
computer microscope - but I can't really recommend it as you can't see a
full line and read the text.

Cheers, Chad

Do a retrieve all headers, this was just discussed last week. It is

EXPENSIVE at around $2500.00 for the machine.
Have you looked on e-bay?

Send a letter to the Family History Center in Salt Lake. They have a public
use machine that puts microfilm images onto CD-ROMs. Be warned, it is
probably too expensive for a private individual to buy. Consider sending
your microfiche to a commercial company for conversion to CD-ROM.
