GenLine Swedish church records online

[Michael VanBaaren]

Has anyone out there tried the GenLine Swedish church records yet? I am
considering a subscription, but was wondering if anyone has positive or
negative experiences to relate? They seem to have all of the parishes I am
researching. It sounds like a really good deal. I'd appreciate any
feedback. Thanks!

It's great. But you have to be able to read older handwriting.

It's great. But you have to be able to read older handwriting.

I see in the parish listing that the "work in progress" is 0 parishes,
does this mean that the entire collection of church books is on the
site? I've got a particularly evasive Swedish ggf who I'd like to look
for.

I have only been looking at records from Blekinge, and most of them were
present, but many of them wasn´t yet labelled correctly and the pages not
numbered.
I suppose that is what they mean by "in produktion".

know which parish he's in, ordering same would be cumbersome.
This looks like the way to find him, since I know the date, just

realize that the Genline images are simply scanned images of the LDS films? and
that your search process will still be the same, although much more convenient.
There is no indexing or search capability as such, so you'll still have to go to
parishes that you select and examine the church registers for the chosen period.

As a curiosity, it is worth mentioning that in the northern, less populated,
part of Sweden, it might take more than half a year, before a priest was
available, and thus baptizing all children born since the last visit.
The same apply to burials, although they had to wait until the frost in the
ground broke up, before they could dig the grave.

Yup. But knowing the date and having the films for the entire fylke (er,
sorry, lan?) makes it do-able rather than "order each of the parish
films, wait weeks, check, lather rinse repeat". Gonna be some quality time
either way. Good thing I have a fast network feed to the house.

Yup, I'm looking at this as the same as going to the Vesterheim for the
Norwegian records, just closer to home by an hour.

thinking is a corruption of V�rmlands and will work on that assumption.

Yes, but in my case I'm sitting on a Mac, ssh'd to a linux box two counties
away, displaying an xterm over an ssh tunnel. Something somewhere
doesn't have full 8-bit character support, and I haven't had the proper
motivation to figure out which just yet.

They're an omljud in this ng, but you key it in the same way.

That's good to know, once I get that fixed. I think it's my posting
Linux box, because it behaves the same way for any client from which I
ssh in. Oddly enough, telnet works, but I'm not leaving telnet on for
any reason for any length of time.

and then, Linux works the same way as Windows by setting Keyboard to US

But Värmlands län consists of quite a few parishes. And if you do not
know the parish, using genline will take a *lot* of time. You have to
search the records of each and every parish to find your man.

Yes, unfortunately that's all I have to work with for him. That and
he's a "Johnson" here, so it may be inconvenient. I do have a precise
date of birth, though, so at least that's something. If I find two
people whose name might be Americanized as "Peter Adam Johnson"
witht that birth date, then it becomes unsolvable.
