What genealogy programs are available for Mac users? I should know this but
forget and I can't seem to find it by searching.

Two of the best are:

GEDitCOM - http://www.geditcom.com/

Reunion - http://www.leisterpro.com/

Using FTM looks a bit complicated. Reunion is $99 and GEDitCOM is $49. Are
there any free ones like PAF is?

Hi Jburns,

I advise you to in future not to top post as it mangles the thread of
the topic and puts it out of kilter.
Any person who is visual challenge that uses software to translate the
text in to voice ends up getting a rather disjointed picture of what has
been said.

As for Free MAC Genealogy Programs I suspect there are none at all.
As for free windows Genealogy Programs, you already know about PAF so I
will add in Legacy SE this is the full blown program that needs to be
registered and then you pay for a code to get every bell and whistle to
work, however you can use it just fine without the extra bells and whistles.
IMHO it is a top notch program and IMHO better than FTM some others will
disagree, however that is my Opinion.

Try doing a Google search and see what you come up with.
For all I know GRAMPS which is a LINUX Genealogical program may work on
your system.

At the end of the day you need to get the programs that best suites your
style or researching and record keeping plus any added features that you
would like to use.
If you do not know yet you will find that there is no one perfect
Genealogy Program quite a lot of use use more than one program for one
reason or another.

Happy hunting.

nearly two years and dead easy

FTM 2008 is newer technology .net but still unfinished

FTM 16 has an excelent GUI
If you are moving from PS to Mac you can keep all your old programs

With Parallels transporter you can make a disk image
of your old PC and open it on the Mac

Reunion

googles well

http://www.leisterpro.com/index.php
I bought version 8 and took an instant dislike to it becasue you cannot
use the trees to navigate only to print out
Just opened it and it failed to find my default browser in the system

I also purchases HEREDIS 10..3

http://www.myheredis.com/
HEREDIS Mac X.2,

neither program seems as easy to me as FTM 16 with its big family page

I cannot make reunion 8 full screen at 1680 by 1050

I made a blog http://mac-on-intel.blogspot.com/ but have little to say

a pictue of my set up snapped with a videophone

Finally exporting a gedcom to world connect enables me to view my data
in many other ways

all the William LAPHAM so far for example

Hugh has a history of bashing Reunion and seems determined to respond to
all such queries by suggesting FTM and Windows on Intel-based Macs.

I think the overview trees are a new feature in Reunion 9. Hugh is
correct that he can't get a full screen display in Reunion 8, but that's
no longer true in Reunion 9. In fact, Reunion 9 was written from the
ground up to be a native OS X application. It's greatly improved over
the previous versions.

While there are other applications for the Mac, and even some that are
cheaper, I think the best thing the OP can do is visit the Leister web
site and download Reunion for a demo. And Hugh should do the same just
so he'll have a more recent version against which to make his arguments
in favor of using Windows and FTM on a Mac.

This is not an attack on Hugh, but folks leave Gatesware for

alternative operating environments for a variety of reasons,
many - if not most - having to do with reliability and stability.
In that case, why would they want to install a windows emulator
on their systems, rather than "go native"? Yeah, there are tons
of applications in Gatesworld, but their counterparts exist for,
e.g., Apple, even if not in the same numbers. Such programis are
frequently better written and more powerful, tho' that's not
guaranteed.

Disclaimer: I use neither Gates Universal Computer Virus and
operating system nor Apple OS-anything. I really don't have
a dog in this fight.

I've been using iFamily for Tiger, which is a great program very well-
supported by its author. He is constantly releasing updates and taking
user feedback. And he has a "register once, get all subsequent updates
free" approach.

In some situations in one's work-life, one needs to be able
to READ from two desks away column 8 of the 6th line of a
spreadsheet. If one can't read it, it's too small,
regardless of the quality of the monitor.

Others have vision issues which make full-screen inadequate
and split-screening a waste of time.

My son and his wife used to have 12 windows open on their
*ix screens; last week with a baby newly walking, they were
down to 4 windows.

We're a Mac household - I've got Reunion version 9, and have been
using Reunion since Christmas 1997 when hubbie bought me version 5.
Right from the get-go, it was easy to use out of the box (no learning
curve). As my experience with and knowledge of genealogy has expanded
over the years, it's kept up with me (I have more sophisticated
requirements now, but its still doing everything I want it to), while
at the same time, would still be great for a first timer.

What's not to like?

exactly why I like FTM 16

when I moved from the Mac to the PC to use voice recognition software
and also started geenalogy
I just got the big box in the computer store
which happend to be FTM - also a waste of money with all those CDs

we all like or love what we know

coming back to the Mac I got the two programs mentioned and found they
were not as good as FTM

Re-entering the Mac cummunity
(I dithered between a Son Vaio laptop and a MacBook Pro)
I joined some usent groups and got some Macintosh magazines one of which
praised Parallels - which was on the last couple of days of its half
price launch offer - after some experiments I got an OEM Windows Xp
disk from a build your own 'puter shop and isntalled FTM 16

warning !!!
FTM17 AKA FTM 2008 - and with newer better technology - is not yet as
easy to use as FTM 16
