Re: Søren Rasmussen Gjessing
Maybe not Danish afterall?
Today there's 395 by the name of Gjessing listed in the Norwegian phone lists.
Most of them live in Trøndelag and in the eastern parts of Norway.
But maybe there's a place Gjessing or something similar with another spelling around Grimstad?

Re: Søren Rasmussen Gjessing
I have Giessings too--but no Søren. The various spellings I've come
across include, Gissing, Gjissing, Gjessing, Giessing, and Giersing.
My Giessings start with Niels Mortensen Giessing who married Maren
Jonasdatter (Wærum) on 6 Oct 1734 in the Trinitatis Kirke in Copenhagen.
He was a carver. It could be he was from Giessing too.

I think the only thing to do is visiting Viborg archive and also the
National archive in Copenhagen to find other sources for that period

I also descend from Rasmus Hansen/Hans Rasmussen Gjessing line that
came to Vestfold, but there are too many Søren around in the the
district to say who is who. And the captain lives around 50 year later
after the Ramnes-Gjessings family came to Ramnes, Vestfold.
A possibility could also be, he is a grandson. One record may be
interpreted like one grand uncle or great granduncle of the one who
came to Ramnes had the name Søren. That one lives around 100 year
earlier than the one who came to Grimstad. Maybe a connection, But
highly speculative.
So, until someone has visited the real archives and has done an
extensive work on finding who is who, I think the OP should accept
facts at this moment, his parentship is unknown.

Hello Jan,
Thank you. Yes I have heard of this Rasmus Hansen who died in Vestfold. But
it is diffucult to proof that they have been related. And in Skanderborg in
the area Gjesing almost every person has been called Søren Rasmussen or
Rasmus Sørensen. Nevertheless, this might come closer, because of his name
and the names of everybody there in Skanderborg.
But also in Randers there has been a lot of people with the name Gjessing.
Thank you really very much for giving me this information, because I did not
know yet about the Grandparent of Rasmus Hansen Gjessing, who has died in
Vestfold
Grand Parents
4. Rasmus Hansen Gjessing, born in Skaderborg, Aarhus, Danmark, died
1695 in Skaderborg, Aarhus, Danmark. Skifte (343) 13.11.1695,
fol.74. E: Kirsten Pedersdatter. B: Rasmus i Skanderborg, Hans sst,
Peder i Gjesing, Anne g.m. Peder Lauridsen, Anne g.m. Anders
Lauridsen i Gjesing. He married Kirsten Pedersdatter.
E probably means wife, I suppose
What means B? (Brother?)
And what means sst?
And Peder i Gjesing? was he a brother too?
And who married Kristen Pedersdatter?
Kind regards

I will try to give you my understanding of yuor questions:
E means Enke -> Widow
B means Barn -> Children
Rasmus, Hans, Peder, Anne and Anne are his children.
Peder i Gjesing -> Peder is living in Gjesing and he is the child
Hans sst -> Hans living at the same place (Samme STed in danish)
Rasmus Hansen Gjessing was married to Kristen Pedersdatter

Re: [GEN-NORDIC] Re: Søren Rasmussen Gjessing
Hello Christina,
Yes, that's indeed the problem that they could have the same name, but not
familyrelated.
In Norway too the descendants of Søren Rasmussen Gjessing have been called:
Gissing, Giissing, Gising, Giersing, Gielsing etc. It was probably a
difficult name.
And the difficulty is that the so called familyname probably refers to the
area from where all these families came from.
Thanks for your answer.
Kind regards
