Torbjørn Kellesvig, f 1797; d USA before 1860
We are looking for information on Torbjørn Kiellesvig/Kjællesvig, born in 1797 in the Aalunds annex/Ølens parish.
We are trying to find out if he emigrated to the US.
We have a grave site where a man of this name is buried, having died between 1850 and 1860, but have no other information on him.
Takk -- De kan skrive på norsk.
John
PS ~ We also would like to know which bygdebok to use for this area.
And, we are interested in knowing what first name was commonly used in America for men with the Norwegian name of Torbjørn.

Hei

Any link to this site? Are you sure this person is a male and not a female called Torbør?

Re: Torbjørn Kellesvig, f 1797; d USA before 1860
Hei Gry ~
We had a gentleman visit us yesterday with a picture of the grave site, and the name is Torbjorn, so we think that it is a male, but information is sketchy.
The reference you provided on the Ølen bygdebok was a great help. We found the farm and their is a man of this name who emigrated to America with his mother and siblings in 1857, but the place in America to which they went is not given. He was born in 1831.
We will check to see if his siblings and mother can be found in the US census records.
Torbjørn Mikkelsen can be ruled out, since he apparently is in the 1865 census in Norway.
Your information has been very, very useful, and we thank you greatly. Please let us know if we can be of help on American issues.

Hi
I guess this is the Torbjørn born 1831 and leaving 1857 you mention.
They are going to N. Amerika together with several others at the same time. Likely they are going to the same place.

Maybe someone know what happened to them?

Hei Vivi ~
Yes, this is exactly the people who we are looking at. We will check the records in the US, but it would be great if anyone in Norway knows where in the US they went and what happened to them.
Med vennlig hilsen,
John
