Johan August Overland hevdes å være grunderen som startet bilfabrikk i Toledo, Ohio, som senere ble kjent som Willys-Overland.

Det er endel motstrid om dannelsen av denne bilfabrikken. Det sies at hans sønner ble tekniske direktører, finner bare en sønn.

Når emigrerte Johan 2. gang etter at han giftet seg med Gurine i 1879? Noen barn født i Norge?

Og familien må vel ha bodd i Toledo Ohio i en periode dersom dette skulle være rett?

Smedmester Johan August Øverland (juli 1846 i Kristiansund- 12.3.1926 i Portland, Multnomah, Oregon,) var sønn av smedmester Ole Øverland (8.6.1816 i Aarøhamn i Bolsø- 23.4.1891 i Kristiansund) og Johanna Barbara Smevig (3.3.1816 -16.2.1889 i Kristiansund).


Gift 4. september 1879 i Stangvik kirke med Gurine Nilsdatter Gjeldnæs (januar 1850 i Trøinn, Stangvik - 3.11.1928 i Portland, Multnomah, Oregon), datter av Nils Halvardsen Gjeldnæs (15.1.1812, Oppistua Gjeldnes - 20.12.1893, Trøinn Stangvik ) og Asbjørg Olsd. Stangvik (22.1.1822 i Stangvik -6.4.1870 sst).

Barn; Olise Overland (1884 i Missouri-), Olaf Overland (1885 i Missouri- 1864 i Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon)

Smedmester Johan August Øverland utvandret 1873 til Amerika. Han returnerte til Norge og giftet seg i 1879. Ekteparet utvandret til Canada 18??.

In 1928 there appeared in the Norwegian press an unusual story. According to it, the once popular Overland automobile was created by one Johan Øverland, who also built the first factory to adopt the principle of mass production.

Øverland, the son of a smith in Christiansund, was, we are told, of the Peer Gynt type. He migrated to America on an impulse, spent ten years at various jobs, ant then returned to his home in Norway, where he became a reputable craftsman specializing in iron stairway railings. The young dreamer was dissatisfied with his lot in Europe, however, and left again for the New World, going this time first to Canada. When Øverland arrived in America the automobile was only just coming into practical being, and his amagination was captured by its possibilities. He designed The Overland Car and started a factory at Toledo which set as its goal the production of cars at popular prices.

His Company, later known as Willys-Overland, by 1928 had plants at Toledo, Pontiac and Stockport, England. J.N. Willys was president. The sons of Johan Øverland later became technical directors of factories.

Øverlandsmia ble bygget i 1846 av smedmester Ole Øverland. Han var bestefar til forfatteren Arnulf Øverland (f. i Kristiansund 1889)
